Being John Malkovich (1999)
Good Start, then totally boring!
The script seemed fairly creative and the opening puppet show gave me a lot of hope for a great film. However, it slowly went down hill as the story went on. Ultimately, it didn't have much to say. Just tired old jokes worked over and the feeling of being just another Hollywood type film. By the end I was really bored and quite happy when it came to an end. It's not a bad film compared to others out there now. Yet, it held out hope for something more and didn't carry through. Yawn!
Karakter (1997)
I was drawn to all the characters ... well done!
I agree with earlier comments about the film. It's a very well crafted drama. I found myself quite drawn to all the characters in the films, even the minor ones. I also enjoyed my virtual visit to historical (pre war) Rotterdam as captured in the costumes, buildings, and everyday streets scenes. It's a bit of a "feel good" film mixed with a touch of tragedy and mystery. I would certainly recommend the film to a friend.
Evidence of Blood (1998)
A surprisingly well done story
I rented this film without knowing anything about it and not expecting much more than a mediocre mystery. However, it's actually a very well done film, both in terms of story and character development. The story takes awhile to unfold as the first part of the film is focused on building characters and a sense of the town in which they live. This in itself is interesting as it comes across in a natural way and gives the viewer the feeling that these people are real human beings. Then we begin to follow a trail of clues both in the present and through flashbacks to the era of the crime. A mistake and a crime happened a long time ago on an abandoned country road. One man has been executed because of it. Others are forced to hide the truth, either to protect themselves or the people they care about. I can't say too much more without giving away the ending, but I think you'll find yourself pulled deeply into the story just as I did. If you enjoyed "Lone Star" then you'll probably enjoy this film too. Please don't dismiss it because it's a made for TV movie as it's certainly better than many theater films.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
Nothing good to say about this film
Sorry, but I don't have a single good thing to say about this film. I ranked it a 3 only because I reserve the lowest rating for enjoyably bad films like "Plan 9 from Outer Space". However, "Midnight in the Garden" was just a waste of time and not a film I would ever recommend. I'm certainly not bothered by long or slow moving films provided that the story and characters are engaging. Yet, this film did neither. It is filled with caricatures and cliches so typical of Hollywood these days. The film masquerades as a mystery, but we know from the beginning who fired the gun and why. The "mystery" is as thin as the cardboard characters. The film also injects totally extraneous comedy into the film, perhaps to please studio executives worried about the mass appeal of the film. After 150 minutes of this I was hoping a large meteor would land on Savanna Rather than waste your time on this film, I would instead suggest watching "Una Pura formalità" (A Pure Formality) or "Evidence of Blood" which are far superior films of the same type.
