A World Apart (1988)
A fine fine film
9 November 2000
This is a very good film with outstanding performances, particularly from Jodhi May and Barbara Hershey. The story of the Slovo-First family is very compelling and deserving of this fine treatment. As someone who has spent time in South Africa, both during and after Apartheid, I can attest to its authenticity.

The film works best, however, as a portrait of a troubled family. It carefully and truthfully depicts the agony of an adolescent girl who knows that her parents are trying to change her world for the better but at the expense of a normal life for her and her siblings. As Gillian Slovo so accurately stated, 'Here we were going off to Girl Guides while our parents were advocating the violent overthrow of our country's government.'

This film makes a powerful and moving, yet personal statement.

Totally Unnecessary
16 April 2000
This waste of time is a completely unnecessary remake of a great film. Nothing new or original is added other than Perry's backflashes, which are of marginal interest. It lacks the documentary feel of the first film and the raw urgency that made it so effective. Also painfully missing is the sharp Quincy Jones soundtrack that added to much to the original film. I can't understand any high ratings for this at all. It's quite bad. Why does anyone waste time or money making crap like this and why did I waste time watching it?

A great romantic comedy
9 November 1999
This is one of my favorite romantic comedies of all time. What's really fun is the mix of cultures - Japanese, American and British. Cary Grant is amazingly cool, Jim Hutton is handsome and enigmatic, Samantha Eggar plays an uptight woman with a very meltable core. A definite.
