Bôken! Iczer-3 (1990)
Not the best release of this OVA....
US Manga Corps' 'Iczer Reborn' is in the Japanese with English subtitles. Even the cover art is considerably better than that of the English release.
Not world-shakingly great anime, but fun. A 10-year-old superconstruct learns how to use her great powers in the defense of Earth, with lots of the slam-bang action we came to expect from the 'giant robot' (yes, there's one of those, too) stories of the 80's and 90's. If Iczer-1 was your cup of tea, you will probably find her little sister's adventures a little too fluffy. If you just enjoy cute-character-saves-the-world stories, you may like this one.
Terror Squad (1987)
Amazingly bad....
If you're making a low-budget film, and care about what you're doing, it shows. Peter Maris' low-budget shoot-em-up, on the other hand, shows just how bad the mixture of lack of money and total lack of interest in the quality of the finished product can be. If you enjoy watching movies for the sake of nit-picking, you can entertain yourself pretty well...there are enough goofy geographical errors alone to keep you busy. Never mind the just-plain-silly bits like the infamous shrinking school bus and the disappearing/reappearing windshield. If you can watch it through more than once, there might be some MST3K potential, but that's the only reason I can give you for watching this movie. Definitely a 1 on a 1-to-10-scale.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
Entertaining, if flawed....
Though the writing and directing were not as strong as they could have been, I still found League (I refuse to use 20thCentury Fox's unfortunate, 21st century-ish aconym) to be an entertaining movie. Diehard Alan Moore fans will probably hate it, but anyone else should give it a try. Go in expecting exactly what it is-a fantasy action film with SF elements, in a very interesting alternate universe. Ignore the critics, just watch it and have fun-and keep your eyes and ears open!
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Don't let the critics or hype decide for you...
My first viewing of TPM was, to put it mildly, sheer sensory overload. The second viewing, things flowed much better and I sat back to enjoy it for what it was. Loved getting a taste of what Jedi could do at the height of their abilities, and the conflict with the Sith. Liked the conflict with the Naboo/Trade Federation. Tolerated the Gungans. ;) The podrace was technically impressive, but wears a bit thin on repeated viewings. My favorite part of it ended up being Qui-Gon and Padme' discussing Jedi recklessness, go figure. IF you haven't seen it yet: Ignore the critics. Ignore the hype. Don't go expecting SW, ESB or ROTJ. Judge it on its own merits and be ready to see it at least twice, once to take it all in and another (at least) to enjoy it.
