The Cable Guy (1996)
Incredibly Underrated
Nobody realizes just how cool The Cable Guy is. I really believe it is one of the most underrated films ever. It is definately a multiple viewer. You have to watch it at least 4 times to get the full effect. I've seen it a little over 30 times. It is almost flawless. Every scene, every line, every inflection in the voice is perfectly delivered. Directed by the king of cool, Ben Stiller, this is a very dark comedy. The humor is kind of hard to find, but once you get it, there is so much to appreciate here. It is for sure a different kind of role for Jim Carrey. Not really serious, but not like his earlier crazy roles either. Best part of the movie: The footage from the TV movie "Brother, Sweet Brother". What makes it so great is that TV style over obvious symbolism. (The happy and sad masks in the background). Funniest Line: I think it was an asian gang!" You'll know it when you see it.
10 Seconds (1998)
WOW! This is really cool.
The rules are simple. 120 seconds separates life or death. This short centers around one prisoner. The premise is not hard to understand. He has 120 seconds to make it to his goal, while being chased by the family of the man he murdered. The most interesting thing here, though, is not the actual chase, but the moral dilemmas involved therein. Do you make it to the goal and spend the rest of your life in jail, or die right there. I'll just say it doesn't end like you would think. Definitely something everyone should see. Who knows what else this director could do?
Lovely (1998)
Quite Lovely
Lovely is a beautiful little short. It follows a breakfast-trolley girl's last day on the job, before she moves up to typist. It is funny, yet touching on a very human level. The Mr. Turtle dance scene is worth the 10 minutes of your time alone. The acting is good all around, and the ordinary life settings are cinematography all fit nicely. If you are a fan of shorts this is definitely one to check out.
Four Rooms (1995)
An entertaining expierience with a shaky foundation
I think the best way to review this movie is to break it into sections. #1-The Missing Ingredient. This is the worst segment in the movie. It is corny, unfunny, and almost spoils the movie. Madonna's appearance is the only thing noteworthy in the entire thing. 1 1/2 of 4. #2-The Wrong Man. This segment is somewhat cool but not up to standards with the next two. The acting is weak and the whole thing seems contrived. 2 of 4. #3-The Misbehavors. This is the best segment in the movie. Rodriguez gives excitement and Banderas is hilarious. Tim Roth also gives his best here. 3 1/2 of 4.#4-The man from Hollywood. This one is directed by Tarantino and is often hilarious. Strong contender for The misbehavors. Tarantino is funny and Bruce Willis is good in it. Also has good tension towards the end. 3 1/2 of 4. Overall the movie could have benefited from 2 stronger opening shorts. Overall score= 3 of 4
