Man in the Wilderness (1971)
Like Watching Grass Grow
This is by far one of the worst movies I have ever seen. This movie is 15 minutes of plot crammed into 105 minutes. My Granny was slow, but she was 97 years old.
The entire movie depicts Richard Harris being done wrong by Houston, and Richard's quest to hunt Houston down.
It is really quite ludicrous watching the evildoers dragging a boat on wheels up and down mountains for over an hour.
If I were a captured enemy spy, and my captors wanted me to tell everything I knew or didn't know, all they would have to do is sit me down and make me watch this mess for about 20 minutes.
Rosemary & Thyme (2003)
The Best Series Ever
I purchased this series on a lark, and I am so pleased that I did. I wish there were 100 more episodes in the series. The lead actresses are perfectly cast. I love most of the English series, but this one is far better than even Poirot.
Felicity Kendal and Pam Ferris are perfect in their roles. While watching the episodes, one comes away with the feeling that these two stars actually enjoyed one another, and they seemed to thoroughly enjoy making the series.
Too bad excellent series get canceled while the plethora of lousy shows seem to go on forever.
The Curse of King Tut's Tomb (2006)
Outstanding Story, Great Acting
I am aware that many reviewers panned this movie. I, however, found it to be a very interesting and a well done action adventure. Albeit, the CGI was rudimentary at best, but the awesome sets more than compensated for this.
It appears that a great amount of money went into making the sets. I love the Indiana Jones'/Mummy series, and these were on par with those much more expensive movies.
I believe the best part of the movie was seeing Leonor Varela. She is truly a beautiful and talented actress. Casper VanDien was excellent as the male lead.
So, if you have a rainy Sunday and nothing to do, kick back, have some popcorn, and take a gander at this movie.
War of the Worlds: The Resurrection: Part 1 (1988)
Errors in Military Uniforms
Having spent 22 years in the U.S. Army and the USAR, I like to pay attention to the Army uniforms worn in movies. The LTC Ironhorse is supposed to be a Special Forces officer. In one scene in hangar 15, his left shoulder unit patch depicts an unknown "leg" unit. In the next scene his left shoulder patch is properly depicted by the Special Forces arrowhead and Airborne tab.
The two doctors are wearing insignia on their "Army" uniforms that make absolutely no sense to me. The LTC's branch insignia on his left collar is incorrectly placed, and it is an insignia I have never seen before.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the acting. The special effects were adequate for 20 years ago. It is too bad the producers have not released the second season, and from what I have read, they do not plan to.
One part of the story I failed to comprehend is that in a scene the LTC has in his hands an M60 machine gun. He discards the M60 and instead relies on his 7 shot, M1911a1, .45 caliber pistol. He's much braver than I would have been.
Foyle's War (2002)
One Small U.S. Army Error
Sam's boyfriend, the G.I, states that he had attended basic training at Fort Benning, Virginia. Having attended Officer Candidate School and Airborne training at Fort Benning in 1967-1968, I know that Fort Benning is in the State of Georgia. I truly enjoy this wonderful series. I believe that Honeysuckle Weeks is England's second greatest asset, after Diana Rigg. As one who is somewhat familiar with WW II U.S. and Allied military equipment and uniforms, I am very pleased to see that the technical advisers have done their homework. I do hope that Foyle's War lasts another ten to twenty years. The British television series are much classier than the tripe we produce in the U.S.
Pulse (2006)
College Students Start Dying
This has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The colors are washed out in an effort, I believe, to give the plot a sort of impending peril. The blue/gray tone was very hard on my eyes. There were no frightening scenes, nothing new, and I wouldn't even watch this movie for free on television. There were a couple of bright spots. The brightest spot had to be the acting of Christina Milian. She is, in my jaded opinion, an awesome actress. The computer graphics of the city are also quite well done. It appeared to me that the closeups of the main characters showed that many were wearing a surfeit of makeup. I am aware that Ms. Bell is a very beautiful young lady, but I believe the makeup obscured her naturally pretty face. I saw the movie for five dollars and at least I was in an air conditioned theater for two hours while my friends were shopping.
Casablanca Express (1989)
Technically One Of The Worst War Movies Made
As a 22 year Army veteran, I become almost nauseous viewing war movies with numerous technical errors. The "Marine" assault battalion fires a 3.5" rocket launcher from a moving train without regard to the back blast effect on the Marines riding directly behind the weapon.
The army uniforms were hokey. Army officers, under the rank of general, have two insignias per lapel, a "U.S." and a branch insignia. About half the time one of our heroes has his worn correctly, the other half of the time incorrectly.
The rescuing Marines have corpsmen with them that have ludicrous looking helmet liners with huge red crosses on them. Those crosses would have made great targets for even a blind sniper.
The soldiers accompanying the train were geared up for combat wearing their helmet liners sans helmets. They also were wearing an American flag patch on their left shoulders. These flag patches should have been on their right shoulders (I know D-Day invasion forces had these flags sewn on, but I am not too sure about our soldiers in Africa) and their unit patches on their left.
Certainly wish some of the directors/producers could spring a few bucks and hire some ex-GI's as technical advisers.
The Assignment (1997)
Excellent Acting
I thoroughly enjoyed this action movie. The chase over the rooftops in Libya is as exciting as the car chase in "Bullet". Quinn is terrific. Sutherland was even appealing for a change. I enjoy movies that seem to take place in various countries, not on a back lot in Hollywood. This is Mr. Quinn's finest performance I have seen.
