The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
this moview kicks ass
I decided to write the review after the second viewing, which was a good idea because the movie hit me harder the second time around.
This may well be one of the best book to movie adaptations ever. Yes certain scenes are missed, but the movie loses little and the non book reader will not miss the loss.
Everything in the movie is near perfect, humble beginnings to wisened traveller - the movie simply rocks the modern Earth. Sure there are flaws, less character development than one might expect, even here I saw more of this the second time.
One word of warning this IS NOT Harry Potter. As a parent of a 9 and 6 year old I was amazed nay shocked at the number of kids under 10 at this movie with parents. By the time they had gotten through Moria the parents in front of me were covering up the eyes of their kid more times than he could see. And by the head lopping shot both parent were covering up the kids eyes. I made the comment "didnt see that in Harry Potter" ! [just loud enough for the parents to hear me]. The book is not for kids, neither is the movie.
I plan to see it at least a few more times. I saw Titanic 5 times and LOTR is way better.
The Terry Fox Story (1983)
poignant then and now
The premiere of this movie was attended by many of Terry Fox's wheelchair basketball team members. It was an emotional event to say the least. I never knew Terry, I arrived in Vancouver shortly after his death, but I took part in the first Terry Fox Run in 1982 and got myself plastered on every front page from coast to coast the following day. Terry Fox was a real person faced with a situation millions of people face everyday, he showed tenacity in the face of adversity and inspired many since - myself included. >
