Memento (2000)
Blew me away
This was one of the best movies I've had the pleasure to see in a year or two. It was suspenesful, sharp, imaginative. It had me guessing until the very end. The script was absolutely impossible to comprehend how someone could write something so complicated. Guy Pierce did an astounding job and of course the the directing was phanominal as well. All over I was completely blown away by this.
Outside Providence (1999)
Sweet but odd...in a good way
I was surprised how much I really enjoyed this movie. It was funny, it was sweet and the plot was interesting. It was also really plausable and very familiar to kids that age. I actually didn't want to rent this movie because I am not a fan of the Farelli Bros. but it took me by shock. I loved the characters, especially the main character. This movie was sweet but at the same time sort of odd (3 legged dog). I always enjoy a movie that I find to be slightly on a different track than others that come around around the same time. This movie was something unique and I wish I'd seen it earlier.
Man on the Moon (1999)
wow
Jim Carrey was simply amazing. He both agitated me and also
made me fall in love with him. He was sweet and crazy and a
genius. The movie was pulled together just right, i never felt
like it was too long. In fact i didn't want it to end. I don't
think anyone would think that someone could pull off playing
andy kaufman. Well, Jim Carrey came as close as anyone will
ever come. To my surprise there were times i forgot it was Jim.
You can see he put his soul int
The Waterboy (1998)
i can't believe i paid $7.50 for it
I can't believe that movie was made and worse that so many people actually saw it. I didn't think there could be a worse adam sandler movie than there already are but Waterboy took the cake. Mostly I am ashamed that someone actually took credit for writing the screenplay.
American Beauty (1999)
Without a doubt the best movie in years...
I believe that Kevin Spacey is the best actor I have ever witnessed and I thought I would never see a role compare to him in The Usual Suspects. He actually blew that role out of the water. Every second he was on the screen I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He literally takes over the movie and all I could think was what would happen next. I am a huge film fanatic and it is not often that a movie will surprise me. This movie did. I never knew what would happen from one second to the next. I was spellbound by the writing, acting, cinematography and directing. I can almost promise this movie to take over the Oscars. The only one that might come close is Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon (if he can truly pull it off).
American Pie (1999)
hillarious and shocking!!!
Only two movies this summer have I particularly enjoyed and wanted to go back to see again. This was one of them...i have already seen it twice. An important part of this movie is that I don't really think anyone over 30 can really enjoy the comedy. They don't understand how perverted and sick teenagers are these days. Not only did I laugh out of my seat but I was also touched as well. It had memorable characters, friendships and a strong plot. If you even think it has anything to do with Something About Mary then you were only paying attention to the masterbation and in turn missed the humor all together.
High Art (1998)
passionate and touching
I was completely moved after witnessing this film. It had a dark complex to it with the desperation and drug use but at the same time it had an undertone of entertwining love. It moved slow but I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen. After watching this film I was jealous to the relationship of Syd and Lucy. This was as close to true love on film as i could imagine.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Interesting/bizarre
Very often I differ from other film critics and I especially do this time. It has been said that Cruise did a horrible job and i disagree. I actually thought he did one of his best jobs. Kidman I thought was alright. Of course she was barely in the movie. I think there were parts of the movie that could have been a little closer to the heart but I do think I was pulled into the plot. Lastly I had a major problem with the horrid editing. It took a lot away from the film. Placing objects in front of scenes and cutting out an ENTIRE scene I think made it not what it was supposed to be. If you want to catch the real thing I think the editors cut on video may be a better idea.
