The Descent (2005)
A claustrophobic nightmare
One of the greatest psychological horror films to come out in recent decades. It plays with very primal human fears on such a great level. Fear of the dark, fear of being lost, fear of loss...they all come into play even before the Crawlers are introduced into the storyline. Sarah is still dealing with the aftermath of what happened to her husband and daughter, and is taking some pretty powerful medication that she knows could cause different psychological effects on her in the first place. This follows up with the scene of the soon-to-be physician, Sam, explaining to them the psychological dangers of caving in the first place, so you almost begin that part of the journey with a sense of dread, knowing that this very vulnerable woman is basically going to be your eyes and ears throughout the movie. And you wonder where Sarah is emotionally when she sees the first Crawler. Is it real? Is it the medication? Is it Sam's warnings? Then, the cave-in, Juno's revelation that they aren't where they're supposed to be, and everyone's sense of absolute betrayal, especially Beth not really believing that she was doing this as a sort of "gift" to Sarah, to get her back in the game. When the Crawlers make themselves known, the nightmare goes from bad to worse, knowing they are being stalked by something...the cracks in the group dynamic become even deeper. And the Crawlers are the icing on an already frightening cake. Being stuck in a system that has not been charted, with an injured team member, lights they know will go out and food and water they know will run out is bad enough, but adding in the threat of something that is clearly far more in control of the situation than the girls are is enough to put the fear of God into everyone. When the full depth of Juno's betrayal, and her almost obsessive attempts to make things right with Sarah become known, everyone pretty much assumes the same attitude as Hudson in Aliens...."Game over, man, GAME OVER!"
I also never found the gore factor to be over the top, I felt it was perfect for the Crawlers. They almost seemed to feed on the fear as much as they did on the bodies. "This is our territory, and we didn't invite you down here". The end of the film was also pitch-perfect. It brought the film full circle with its themes of primal fears mixed with everything Sarah had gone through. It was enough to leave me scratching my head, wondering just how much of what I had just seen was real. And I think it would have been an amazing ending to an amazing film. Shame they had to cash in on the money train and do that ridiculous sequel.
Midsomer Murders: The Night of the Stag (2011)
Oh dear.
This episode...oh man it's just bad, bad TV. I took a poll on a MM Facebook page asking which episodes fans found hard to watch or didn't watch again after they first saw it, and this topped the list. It seemed to revel in and glorify rape culture, especially when it came down to Esme and Alice, who were very UNWILLING participants in this "ritual". I mean even at the end, Samuel was only charged with murder. He should also be charged with attempted rape, but even though he was arrested in the middle of attacking Esme, nothing more was said about it.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
What a piece of crap
I sincerely hope this puts people off of hiring D&D to run a show ever again. They took something so magical and completely trashed it in the end. Only good thing I can say is that I went in with low expectations, and wasn't disappointed.
Angels' Brigade (1979)
Gabriel is out for revenge!
Actually, compared to some of the other "movies" MST has shown, I didn't really consider this one to be half-bad. Of course the acting was absolutely terrible, but such was the 70's jiggle-fest of B-movies. I kinda have to wonder whether this was an actual movie, or just a REALLY long commercial for Wonderbras and Pantene.
Troll 2 (1990)
Oh......my.......GOD!!!!!!
I have never ever seen such a worse piece of absolute drek than this movie. I'm very surprised MST didn't grab this one to laugh at. Horrible acting, horrible dialogue, horrible storyline. My family and I like to rent this one for a laugh every now and then. in the video store my brother works at, they have it filed under "Comedy", with very good reason!
