The Island (2005)
Why wasn't it more popular?
With all the commercial hype, I can't believe this movie was a box office flop. I went to see it and plan to buy the DVD when it comes out (OK, yeah, I'm a big Sean Bean fan, but ...) and I thought it was a great movie. Granted it had some elements that we've seen before, but that doesn't mean it was a bad movie. One of those mysteries where the critics were kind but the viewers just stayed away. The action sequences were great, and the story was very thought-provoking. The acting was also really good, in my opinion. It's definitely an evening's entertainment even if it's not really Oscar material. And that's what I have to say about that. (OK, that's 10 lines - lol)
Sharpe: Sharpe's Honour (1994)
One of my favorites
The banter and humorous rescue scene help to make this one of my favorites of the 14-movie series. Wonderful acting, great cast. And this movie contains one of the few oft-noted facts about Sean Bean's career. The part where he and Alice Krige fall off the horse into the water was not scripted but was left in since they both went right on acting after it happened.
This is a good follow-up to the intense ending of Sharpe's Enemy.
Sherlock Holmes Faces Death (1943)
One of my favorites
I dearly love all of the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce SHERLOCK HOLMES movies, but this one is one of my favorites. Maybe it's just some fond memories from my youth. A modern comparison can be made between the chess game in this movie and the one in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Even though no one actually died in Potter's game, murder surrounded the Musgrave Ritual -- so which one could be deemed more violent? Both movies arrived at the mysteries' solutions after the completion of the game, so there's another loose comparison.
Child of Darkness, Child of Light (1991)
Eh, not so great
This movie is about the apocolyptic birth of two babies to two virgins. Very big on religious themes. It's far from a great movie, but it is based on the book VIRGIN by James Patterson. I had read the book years ago, so had more of an interest in seeing the movie. It follows what I remember fairly accurately. This movie can be considered "horror" because of the sinister aspects of the visions and occurrences that the girls experience.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
One of my favorites
I've watched this movie pretty often since I purchased the video, and consider it to be one of my favorites. Chris Tucker makes the entire movie with his outrageous performance as Ruby Rhod. And Gary Oldman gets to shine again as yet another psycho freak. I think that the movie has enough action to be interesting, and in its own bizarre way the plot holds together. It's supposed to be unbelievable (it IS 300 years in the future!). I think it's a fun flick to pass the time.
