The Order (2001)
Van Damme Scores Again
Van Damme scores again. I must admit to being a pretty big Van Damme fan. Some of my favorites are Hard Target, Sudden Death, Double Team, and Replicant. Heck I even enjoyed Legionnaire. However, when I viewed Desert Heat I was extremely disappointed. When I heard Replicant was coming out I had great reservations, but ended up not only liking it but putting it as one of my favorite Van Damme films. With expectations raised I picked up "The Order" and was not disappointed. After a nifty little prologue the action starts with a nice little heist and seems to never let up. The action scenes are top notch, including martial arts, car & motorcycle chases, and shootouts. Van Damme is great in the fight scenes and seems to be in great shape. He also injects some nice humor into the role. Director Sheldon Lettich infuses the flick with some nice energy and good use of slo mo/fast motion. I also liked the flicks editing, especially of the action scenes and also the use of the "wipes". Although this flick does not give Van Damme the chance to give a juicy performance like in Replicant or have much character depth, it is still a lot of fun. Van Damme is getting back to what his fans want to see him to most and that is kick some major butt. At only 89 minutes The Order is a fun, action packed ride. 8 out of 10
Replicant (2001)
See this movie!!!!!
this is by far JCVD's best movie. The script is pretty good, JCVD is two great performances(especially the one as the replicant). Mike Rooker is also good as the hard edged cop.The direction of Ringo Lam also puts this film over the top as does the cinematography. I also must say that editing also gives this film a really good pace which never really lets up. The only down side to this is that some charactater development(Yes i am talking about character development in a vandamme movie)could have been a little better, you will see what i mean if you watch the deleted scenes on the dvd. The last thing i want to say is that i cant believe artisan put this straight to video. it deserved to been seen on the big screen. So good story, good acting, and great action sequences make this a must see movie
Mimic 2 (2001)
A sequel that delivers!!
Unlike most people i thought that the first Mimic was pretty decent. It was a big budget B movie that was pretty fun. The same thing can be said about Mimic 2. Dont let the fact that it went direct to video stop you from renting it(IT had a 10 million dollar budget). This time the story revolves around Remy(Mira Sorvinos friend from the first film). She is a teacher at a school and pretty soon people she knows start to turn up dead. Mimic 2 has alot going for it. First off the cinematography and the set desing are really cool. Man did the lighting really add to the creepiness of the film. I also have to give much credit to the editor of this film. Running at just 82 minutes the film runs at a very crisp pace. This helps the film because instead of focusing on the some of the obvious plot holes, the viewer is sucked in to this rollercoaster ride of a movie. This film wont win any oscars, but it will give you 82
minutes of pure
