Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
One of the top five best movies of 1999
Frank Pierce is a paramedic with a problem. He's divorced, he's an alcoholic, he's depressed, but that's not it yet. He's haunted by a life he never got to save, and ever since then, his patients have been dying on him. He cruises the filthy streets of Hell's Kitchen searching for a soul he can possibly give life to, and end his streak of dying souls. But everyone he handles dies, and he sees the face of the girl he couldn't save.
Frank rides the ambulance with three other paramedics. There is Larry (John Goodman) who takes his job as a paramedic seriously, and uses it to be food on the table. There's Marcus (Ving Rhames) who looks at his job as a way to show people the meaning of Jesus Christ, and takes every life he saves from the clutches of Death as a miracle to show to unrighteous witnesses. And there's Tom Walls (superbly played by Tom Sizemore) who is a crazy sadist and loves to watch these NYC victims squirm in pain. Scorcese outdoes himself again in one of his best movies to date. With sidewinding camera angles, outstanding performances (Nicolas Cage), and a stupendous story to boot. The colors, and art direction is awesome too. I'd like to know one thing, "where the hell was the Academy Awards for this?"
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Hands down: The best screwball comedy ever.
"Well, you look perfectly idiotic in those clothes." "These aren't my clothes." "Well where are your clothes?" "I lost my clothes!" "Well then why are you wearing these clothes?" "Because I just went GAY all of a sudden!"
One of the funniest scenes in film history is this one, with Cary Grant dressed in a woman's bath robe. You'll laugh 'till you cry.
The whole movie is a laugh riot though. With Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn at the top of their game. The plot and acting are above and beyond, and after the film is done, it will leave you saying, 'They don't make 'em like they used to.' And they sure don't.
Fargo (1996)
Definitely the best movie of 1996.
This film is definitely in my top 5 films of the 90's. It's the first Coen brothers movie I've seen so far, and it sure won't be the last. Comedy, weirdness, suspense, and so much more is mixed in to a hilarious, uneasy, and sometimes an edge-of-your-seat movie. Whatever you do, don't watch it on TV, where so much is edited out. 9 out of 10.
Scarface (1983)
Not that good
I recently watched this film a couple weeks ago, and I was forever waiting for this slow-moving, boring movie to end. Definitely not for mile-a-minute action fans, because it makes you wanna fall asleep throughout the whole middle of the film. You could sleep through the climax if you wanted to! Incredibly dull, and trite. The only thing that holds it up is Pacino's masterful, bravura performance. Otherwise, a stinker.
Conviene far bene l'amore (1975)
Stupid Italian junk
There is no power in Italy, so a professor feels that by using power given off by sex, they can light Italy up again. I don't know what you're thinking, but just hearing that, it sounds like a stupid film. And it is. It's just a stupid excuse to have sex on the screen.
Citizen Kane (1941)
The best motion picture ever made
I must have seen this film 20 times, and never get bored of it once. The cinematography, the actors from Mercury Theater, and the incredible screenplay will blow you away. It has amazed me that this film was booed at the Academy Awards preview, and only won one Academy Award for Best Screenplay! I highly agree with AFI for choosing this movie as #1. **** out of ****
