The Langoliers (1995)
I don't think some people get it
I don't look to this movie (or the Tommyknockers, which gets the same mixed reviews) for the special effects or the best acting in the world. I look to them because they offer insight into our imaginations, something that we tend to lose the older we get. These movies are made to get your imagination pumping, and make you think about other situations rather than our own current situations.
Immerse yourself in the film's story, not in the acting, or the music, or the plot holes that may or may not exist. In the case of this movie, it almost has to be watched in whole to get the effect.
Just my own opinion.
The Lawnmower Man (1992)
Not bad, especially the second time around
I saw this movie when I was 13 or 14, and didn't understand it at all. I was enamored by the visual effects. This time around, I'm 22, and have an electronics background, so I understand some of the concepts a little more. It really isn't a bad movie, it speculates what the world will become in 2001, which is obviously a little innaccurate, considering it's almost 2002, but still. The concept is completely science fiction, and, for all we know, could be a sign of things to come. Maybe not now, but in the future. It won't be as obvious as a mainframe with open I/O ports letting a purely electronic being out into the world's data networks, but it could be a precursor to some AI developments. In 50 years, people may think this movie was worthless, or they could think that it was a vision into the future.
Either way, the movie makes you think, and that is more than can be said for a lot of movies (i.e. Dude Where's My Car). Good movie. Rent it or watch it on the Sci-Fi channel.
From Hell (2001)
Terribly predictable, even having no prior knowledge
I've never read any Jack the Ripper books.
I've never seen any Jack the Ripper movies.
I didn't even know the story behind Jack the Ripper until the other day. Then I saw From Hell. The title of the movie is ironic because it seems the movie itself came "From Hell." I will never get that 2 hours (and $8) of my life back. The movie was slow moving, incredibly predictable, and had a slow, drawn out climax.
The scenery was amazing, and the special effects were fantastic. That much I'll give. Even the acting was good. It is just that the story stunk.
Don't go see it. Rent it. Maybe even wait for HBO. You already know what happens anyway.
The Natural (1984)
A fantastic movie, not given enough credit by the guy from London, Ontario.
There is a long-winded gentleman that posted from London, Ontario that obviously doesn't like baseball or good movies.
He points out supposed holes in the plot that, although irrelevant, are not there if he were to watch the movie. The "sinister" owner of the team does not like light because he was scared of the dark as a child, and trained himself to like the dark. The reviewer points this out as if it is a gaping hole, ruining the whole movie.
"Uninspired" is a large word, and the reviewer uses (or alludes to) it quite frequently. A true baseball fan couldn't help but be inspired by this movie. What person doesn't or hasn't dreamed about a bottom of the ninth, game winning home run? This movie one-ups that fantasy by putting not one, but two plots behind it. Pop gets his team back and the Judge gets screwed, and Roy gets to go out in style with his lifelong love and his son.
The reviewer is correct about the score, however smart seems to be an understatement. Excellent could be attributed to the music, not to mention the setting, script, timeline and plot.
Reviews should be left open for open-minded individuals, not cynical blow-hards who just like writing about what is bad. This movie is not be the best movie ever, but I challenge someone to come up with a better baseball movie.
20 Dates (1998)
This movie is funny, even if it isn't what it was intended to be
This movie, having been criticized for not being a mockumentary, is still a funny movie. If you don't watch this movie with a mockumentary premise, then it is very entertaining, and quite funny. The viewer can most definitely relate to several parts of it, and that alone makes it worthwhile watching. I recommend this movie for sheer entertainment, not for knowledge.
