We Are with the Band (2010)
Great original show
Like other reviewers I was turned on to this show at ITVFest in LA. Very funny show revolving around the hi-jinks of 2 young ladies who refuse to grow up. The humor is well done, and doesn't go over the top. It picks a comedic tone and sticks with it (something other independent shows struggle with). Additionally it's grounded enough to have some sweet moments. Don't worry about the terms "independent" or "web series", the production quality is quite good. It's shot and edited well, with nice locations for a micro budget. The two leads (Kerr and de Barros) are perfect as pathetic yet lovable scenesters. There are some hilarious and memorable performances from the supporting cast as well. It's on web, so give it a shot. Now!
Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Comedy?
I guess this movie does qualify as a comedy. There were plenty of jokes and gags in every scene. It doesn't matter that only a few were funny. Still, I prefer to think of this film a light hearted sci-fi. Sci-Fi Lite. I believe that's what I'll call it.
The Sci-Fi Lite plot was the only reason I didn't change the channel. And possibly the fact that there might be a somewhat humorous joke in the remainder of the film.
As an alternative Sci-Fi Lite film I would have to recommend "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home." It has a better plot, funny jokes, and whales. In addition, it's even lighter!
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
I lie awake at night thinking about this film...
Sure, you may laugh at the acting, 80's outfits, dialogue, etc etc, but there's something more. Aside from the ending which shocks and disturbs many, I find myself contemplating this film long after I've finished watching it. Questions are raised... but never answered.
I recommend this: Watch this film with a group of people. Separate and think about what themes were presented in the movie (you could even write a 'response' paragraph). Regroup and discuss.
Or you could just watch the movie and go to bed.
Groove (2000)
What were they thinking at Sundance?
Not very good at all I'm afraid. All the makings of a bad movie. There are poor characters that you just don't care about. It's got little or no plot, and when something does happen it's completely predictable. If somebody asked me what this movie was about I would say, "It was about a rave... WHERE NOTHING HAPPENED." Long story short, avoid this film.
The Cannonball Run (1981)
Painful to watch.
Absolutely horrible. At first I though a team of monkeys had written the script. Then I realized that there probably never was a script. Very painful to sit through. A bunch of stars spout off some unfunny lines which are made even worse by downright awful comedic timing and editing. You do get to see a little of Jackie Chan doing some kung fu fighting. Other than that the outtakes during the end credits is the only entertaining portion of the film.
