Cronicamente Inviável (2000)
An unfeasible country ?
This movie is a cruel satire of the Brazilian middle-class. Is shows how distant are the rich from the poor in this country, and how this situation generates violence and hypocrisy. There's no subtlety - just the reality as it really is, making one consider a final surrender to cynicism. Worth watching and thinking about.
O Oitavo Selo (1999)
A satire of Bergman´s "The Seventh Seal"
Depressed by unemployment and a complicated marriage, a man decides to die. He meets Death in a night club, but then decides to take it back. They resolve the dilemma by playing a snooker game.
This is an unpretentious satire of "The Seventh Seal" by Bergman. A very funny Brazilian short movie.
Um Copo de Cólera (1999)
A fair try, but still disappointing for Nassar´s readers.
Raduan Nassar´s "Um Copo de Colera" (A glass of rage) is a short but powerful book. Sexuality, political repression, alienation and instinct are some of the themes that emerge from a fight between a couple, after a wild sex night. Overall, a superb critic on middle-class values.
But the movie lacks the novel´s power. Julia Lemmertz and Alexandre Borges (who are also a couple in real life) put a lot of effort into their characters, but end up adding a comic approach which doesn´t exist in the book.
The sex scenes are impressive, fantastic-realistic maybe. But after that the movie fails to turn Nassar´s words into equally strong images.
