Non ho sonno (2001)
Amateurish and boring.
It's rather disheartening to see so many Argento fans giving Non ho sonno such high marks. It almost feels as if the expectations are so bad that the bar's been lowered. Sad. Argento is ripping himself off here ... with a totally inconsequential plot, poor acting, boring scenes ... ugh. Argento doesn't make any more or less sense of this plot than he did with any of his others, but Non ho sonno is bereft of any of the gorgeous visuals and pulsing energy of his best films. Stay away and rent some classic Argento.
No One Sleeps (2000)
One of the worst.
"No One Sleeps" is perhaps the worst film I have ever seen. Looking past the extremely poor acting, shockingly poor (and often hilarious) screenplay, incredibly cheap and uninteresting cinematography and terribly generic serial killer plot, Mr. Hicks' film is obsessed with the morbid, tawdry parts of gay life - which is fine - but he never makes any kind of comment or statement on them. So what's the point? The use of Turandot throughout is so forced (and so annoying) that it becomes laughable. Really mind boggling how stupid this one was. Honestly, some of the worst acting I've ever seen projected on a screen - one wonders, however, whether to blame the actors or the piss-poor lines they've been given. Tom Wlaschiha, as the lead, does have his moments ... but they are rather few. I'm sure there are those who would defend this film by hiding behind its (obviously) small budget - but watch it and you'll know that's no excuse.
Dead of Night (1974)
Bob Clark is severely underrated ...
I firmly believe that if Bob Clark had continued directing horror films he'd be counted among George Romero, Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham as one of the modern horror film's originators. His early work, most notably "Black Christmas" and "Deathdream," is highly recommended to fans of 1970's horror. He has an incredible knack to work wry humor into his films without injuring the sense of dread and visceral scare. He has a fantastically competent, appropriate style that manages to shine through on even the smallest budgets. Very impressed! I might even rent "Baby Geniuses" ... :(
The Debt (1993)
An ingenious short film.
I was lucky enough to see "the Debt" on Bravo a few years ago. I was blown away by the concise story, impressive storytelling, and beautiful photography and have been searching for information on the film ever since. I don't know if it's available at all, but it's a bravura short and deserves to get more play. Kudos to Mr. Almeida.
