Oh Heavenly Dog (1980)
One of my favorite movies
This is one of the best things that Chevy was ever involved in. Although ninety five percent of his participation was only his voice, as he was killed off early in the movie, I thought that the movie was good, solid entertainment. Almost without exception, I've always seen the film badly panned by most critics and movie reviews, but I was really pleased to see that most folks who took the time to comment on IMDb were highly complimentary and reaffirmed that I was not wrong on this one. Maybe you just need to have a bit of imagination and a real love of animals, particularly dogs, to get all there is out of the movie. See it, enjoy it and then comment. Don't let poor reviewers keep you from the fun!
Broken Flowers (2005)
How do I stay awake?
Bill Murray has the narrowest range of any actor who has been "starred" in a movie. After being totally "Lost in Translation," I decided to give Bill another try with this one, but have come away feeling like I just wasted the time it took to stay awake though this lifeless dirge.
I truly believe, that another actor with some range of emotion could have easily increased my enjoyment of the film and added something in the way of emotion and depth to a character who is strictly two dimensional on the screen.
Another issue I had with this film is that he literally just sits through 98% or the film and the camera mirrors his his lack of emotion throughout this enthronement. Caddy Shack - Great! Groundhog Day - Good! Broken Flowers - Only for the patient and alert Bill Murray Fan...
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Starting with Disney's phony hype and downhill from there...
I have seen "Bowling for Columbine" and found it to be interesting and perhaps even entertaining, but its owner is one of the most repulsive figures in the business. That's the feeling I took into watching Fahrenheit 9/11. That this film earned a "Palm d'Or" at Cannes tells me that the Golden Palm is no longer a guide to great film making, but a political vote cast by a liberal camp. Michal Moore conducts interviews with bait & switch questions, conclusion drawn from totally irrelevant statements and journalism without context. While this film did give me cause think about the Iraq war and terrorism in general, it left me feeling that I was watching a video of some internet conspiracy theory that had gone on too long. As he did in Columbine, he duped people into looking foolish, paraded grief as some special insight and conducted a strident, personal vendetta directed toward GWB. Though I don't agree with all of the administrations decisions and policies conducted in the Middle East or even many of the "Homeland Security" vs. freedom implications, I could not give any credence to this biased, poorly assembled, piece of propaganda. Perhaps propaganda was the category under which the Palm d'Or was awarded and in that case, it may have been deserved. I awarded this effort 3 of 10 based on its ability to raise controversy, but wouldn't recommend that people actually view it, unless there was nothing else on.
Saved! (2004)
Can I no longer depend on IMDb ratings?
Can I no longer depend on IMDb ratings? I watched this movie based on a 7+ rating at IMDb and initially thought that it might be a worthwhile effort. It started off as an irreverent, slightly off beat piece in the vain of "Dogma." However, any comparison between the two is ill placed. It was just another formula, high school venue, good girl (really bad) bad girl (really good) teen angst movie. Other comments regarding casting, don't really matter, as any young appearing actor or actress would have been left with the same crappy script and the results would have moved it 1/2 star either way. The script was pure Annette Funicello with a fifties morality and everything working out "just swell" at the end. Bart & Lisa might have done this justice with a little script re-work. I give it a rousing 2 out of 10!
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
This movie is visual, but not engaging. I hope the next sequel gets back to the original
I was almost constantly lost in this movie and not interested enough to "rewind." This movie is like the original, visual, but not engaging to the point where I could give a damn. I hope the next sequel, Revolution, gets back to the original storyline and gets the characters to carry the movie rather than the computer graphics.
Mercury Rising (1998)
Some good Bruce Willis suspense/action with Bruce Willis acting.
A good work combining some of the action that Bruce Willis is noted for, along with some of the better acting he has done like Pulp Fiction, Sixth Sense & even 12 Monkeys. A little less smart alecky John McClane goes a long way for me. The acting by the little boy, Miko Hughes, was also well done. Alec Baldwin didn't do much for this film and I thought that his sinister role might have been done by any number of capable character actors. In general, a good, fast moving flick, better than I had expected.
