Puberty Blues (1981)
Aussie Teen Social Ritualistic Movie 1980's
Debbie Vickers (Nell Schofield) and Sue Knight (Jad Capelja) want to become one of the cool girls in their high school. Uncool and ugly girls had two options, be a mole or a prude! Debbie and Sue imitate them by using their cheating practices in an exam. Two of the cool boys, Garry (Goeff Rhoe) and Danny (Tony Hughes) ask them for their answers and they all get busted. After a bawling out from the headmaster (Bud Tingwell) the cool girls meet them outside in the playground and confronted them about whether they "dobbed" on them all. As Debbie and Sue hadn't the cool girls invited them to the "dunnies" for a smoke. They then start to hang with them on weekends at the beach, watching all the boys surf. Sue ends up going out with Danny and Debbie with Garry. A lot of usual teenage action takes place including sex, drugs and rock and roll. Garry has an eventual overdose of heroin which makes Debbie face the inequalities of life and she decides to learn to surf instead of just watching the boys. They are not happy but watch her, calling names, and eventually Debbie masters the board. A cool early 80s Aussie film.
Chopper (2000)
A Little Disappointed
Although I was impressed with the production of Chopper, I felt the storyline went nowhere. I was waiting the entire movie to see why Chopper was such a well known Australian criminal, and from what I did see, it is rather obvious, but I did expect a lot more. A wonderful performance by Eric Bana, although very forced at times.
Sooner or Later (1979)
Lucky me!
I first saw Sooner or Later when I was 13 one Sunday afternoon. It moved me so much I have spent the last 18 years searching for it, and living in Australia it has been impossible. I am so excited as I just purchased a copy at E-Bay at a personal expense of $200 ($AU) including having it re-taped in our VHS format (PAL not NTSC), and I think it is worth every cent. If you are looking for a copy, keep your eyes open at E-Bay. I haven't received it yet and the anticipation is KILLING me! We all have EXCELLENT taste.
Here I am adding to this review 8 years later and the video turned up. I just finished watching it again for about the one zillionth time. I got married last year and we included "Take My Breath Away" on our wedding soundtrack that we used for the bonbonierie (table gifts for the guests). It will always be a part of my life.
