Robin and Marian (1976)
Underrated masterpiece
Others have said much of what I feel about this great and tear jerking movie but I wanted to comment that the edited fight scene between the Sheriff and Robin that is usually shown on TV sometimes leads people to think Robin would have survived his wounds, and Marion's actions were effectively murder. Not so, as the deep sword cut sliced into Robin that is often omitted would not have been survivable - even now probably.
Streets of Laredo (1995)
Alternate universe
The reason this does not tie in with 'Return' is that it is a completely alternative ending/storyline to the truly great LD original. Such a shame the author chose to do this and not make any effort to look after the fans who would have wanted it to at least make sense after 'Return'.
And Pea and Loreena? No way!
Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
Brilliant
A movie I can watch time and time again - and it is the only film I have ever seen that at 72 still unsettles me enough to make sure the doors and windows are locked before viewing. Forget the dated effects and enjoy the story and the simple but quite brilliant dialogue - ''It was inside'' ''They'd have been felling trees'' ''The old spelling'' etc etc
The Homesman (2014)
Dreadful
Such a disappointent. Film makers cannot make good westerns anymore and this is a lazy, illogical, depressing, low budget effort, and in an attempt to make itself realistic succeeds in being almost totally unrealistic. Even the horrible Bone Tomahawk was better and that DVD was literally thrown out of my house. Don't bother.
There is a much better detailed and accurate review of this rubbish elsewhere.
Shane (1953)
The best of them all
First saw Shane when a boy of 6 living in two rooms in London England - the only entertainment in those days were the movies -no TV, records etc etc
It seemed to set all my life interests for me - cowboy movies, music, mountains (but not cricket!)
In 1987 at age of 40 I finally got to visit the Tetons and have been going back whenever I can - driving around the locations with the film music playing. What a fantastic area!
Shane is now something of a personal travelogue! But it is still the best ever. No need to review it - it is close to perfect ( despite the odd continuity error and the RV in the first scene on the Kelly Road!)
