Encrypt (2003)
Stock Sci-Fi i.e. Melodrama in the future.
This isn't a bad movie, as much as it is a bland movie.
The plot has much more to do with human "melodrama" than it does with any particular science fiction element. The story could be told in the middle ages as much as in the future.
It is watchable, and there are some fairly attractive images. I'd watch it again, but mostly only if something better wasn't on. I gave it a 7 but it's probably only a 5 or so.
The Beast (1996)
Not just for the special effects.
Special effects are OK, but if you don't have some sort of story behind it, you might just as well watch fireworks.
This isn't the strongest story in the world, but it does have a number of good moments that only add to the problems the squid causes. A fat cat rich guy, a boat captain with more ethics than sense, and the desperation of town folk, in an area where the main business of fishing is starting to fail.
Most of the back story could be transposed to any location in the country have have strong grains of truth in it.
While a four hour mini series could have easily been told as well in two hours, it is still a good story. I'll watch it again.
Wizards (1977)
Fun to watch for the relaxed person.
Wizards isn't for the "normal" viewer, but those open-minded viewers open to interesting experiences will enjoy it at least once. It helps if you already know who cheech wizard is, from the Heavy Metal genre magazine.
I'm sort of surprised it hasn't become more of a cult movie, it has some great one-liners in it. Little guy taking on big guy is a very common theme, but it's handled well here, and it can be fun picking all the real-world references out of the picture show.
I hope this makes DVD soon, because this is a good one for a collection, to take out on a Sunday afternoon once a year or so, to help remember how cartooning and sometimes what life in the 70's was like.
