Shi mian mai fu (2004)
Beautiful cinematography dull and predictable story.
"Is it worth seeing?" Yes, if you like the genre. "Worth buying?" That's up to you, I wont. "Is it a good movie?" Only average I'm afraid.
I read some of the debate by mainly Asians on is this a good move or not, better than Crouching Tiger or worse?? than Hero and how true is it to the original wuxia story. The comments raised my curiosity but all so worries about cultural based opinion differences. Being a "westerner" and having no knowledge of the original stories and not that much of the wuxia genre I can offer an objective "outsider" opinion on the quality of this movie.
As a movie this is not equal to CTHD or Hero. It's slow paced whit fairly little action and has the typical low key depressing mood to it that all Asian movies I've seen have but the slow speed and dull story make it worse. The action sequences are great to spectacular as usual for high budget wuxia. Battle in a bamboo forest is always a good idea and there is newer too much of it :) I must praise the cinematography and elaborate set design that ALL of the films mentioned have, Hero being the best of all. Visually this movie is beautiful but does not reach Hero's level.
6 IMDb points.
Starsky & Hutch (2004)
Name one good movie whit Ben Stiller in it. This is not it.
This movie is awful! It has nothing to do whit the TV series other than original star cameo and the car. The whole movie is just Ben Stiller BS that would be expected as a bridge between scenes but the plot scenes are the bridge between these boring and un funny "comedy" bits. PLEASE! Snoop Dogs character is the star of this movie and steals every scene. I gave this turkey 2 points, 1 for the movie, 1 for Snoop Dog AND just for Carmen Electra being in it.
(I hope the DVD features deleted scenes of Carmen whit swim suit optional footage :)
Mindhunters (2004)
Renny is back!
The delayed justification for director Renny Harlins stay in Hollywood. Renny is back at what he does best, action gore whit a little twist. A classic "who done it" movie that keeps you guessing and throws you of the tracks as much as possible. Nothing spectacular or new but the same old dish done well.
I can recommend this to all fans of murder mystery and the casual horror fan just for the nice FX work. This is the level of gore that modern movies need! Hienoa Renny!
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
T3 Death of the franchise
I saw this turkey whit an open and virgin mind. I had managed to avoid all trailers and spoilers and had no preconceptions about the movie. This WAS an important movie and deserved my full first time reaction to it. Sadly this movie is Episode I&II, Alien 4 and Robocop 3 all over again. Atypical Hollywood third act in a brilliant series UNTIL NOW! As you can read from the goofs page and see in the movie some one didn't do their home work and didn't pay attention on the set, reading the script and in editing! Mr. Mostow what have you got to say for your self? This is a pitiful sequel! The plot AND action are SO full of holes that you can use this as a fishing net. The future will agree whit the people who think this is scum. T3 will end up being the almost unmentioned third movie in the DVD box set. Most people will newer even take it out of the box. Why would you want to? Who wants to invite the guy that spoils the party? The premise promises a watch able movie, but the execution fall flat on its face. It manages to fly for about 45 minutes if you excuse the constant "action" bloopers that you are used to seeing in 80's action but this is T3 not Commando 2. All I can hope is that T4 is newer made and they release a dir.cut DVD whit 60 min of new footage (please omit 30 min from the end!) and 20 min of added length. There are only 2 good thins in T3 the new terminator, she is sexy and a nice "robot" and the nasty action in the beginning in the T1 style of "are you Sarah Connor? BANG!" They should have gotten Paul Verhoeven to direct...
Please don't buy this DVD.
Hulk (2003)
What a disappointment!
I waited for so long for this movie. Ang Lee directing a character that can give you incredible action, this had the potential of a classic. But what happened? Its the "John Woo syndrome" all over again! Great work in Asia but when the director is brought over to Hollywood the work is TERRIBLE. Just judging by this movie Ang Lee is better suited for cinematography NOT directing. Crouching Tiger built up the expectations SO HIGH, so the drop to the Hulk's level is HUGE. Mr.Lee seems totally lost in this movie, there is no angle to the story and the story is bad too. I don't know if Mr.Lee wanted this project or was it given to him but it feels forced.
This movie is Resident Evil all over again and that's an insult.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Less irritating doesn't mean better than Episode 1
George has taken out the electric sander and used a roll of 80 grit on the "edges" of Episode 1 to make Episode 2.
"OK. People hated Jar-jar, Darth Maul was too scary. Lets just sand away so no one can point at one single thing that they hated through out the movie." This has clearly been the thinking at the "Ranch".
So we have 2h 25min movie that has about 2h of afternoon soap opera and 30min of un emotion evoking action.
However Episode 2 has more of an "Star Wars feel" to it than Episode 1. Subtle references to the originals in the form of clothes an hair are obvious.
A great opportunity to get back the respect has again been missed. Episode 3 is coming. Be very afraid!
Two Can Play That Game (2001)
4x better than Bridget Jones
This movie is funny in abundance. It succeeds in all the areas B.J Diaries was hyped of succeeding but DIDN'T. Extra point for the Jag. The humor is on the edge of being targeted a little too much for the American audiences. Even if you aren't from "the States" but you are familiar with black American culture you'll get the jokes.
Driven (2001)
Renny you shouldn't have gone there!
Renny Harlin has clearly demonstrated that he has no sense of style or good judgment. If he had either he never would have made this movie. Movie about Formula 1 or any sport can only be good if its intense human drama. If you play the action card you get just another bad sports action movie. Comedy would be the other route to success but this movie is serious drama action based on a bad script and directed by a horror oriented director HELP! The first 10 minutes were so awful cliché porridge that I wanted to hide under my seat in shame.
If you want race track drama watch Days of thunder. If you want racing fun watch the Cannon ball runs. For crash FX just fast forward over this movies "talky" bits and your in for a treat.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
I cant believe they got money to do this!
***This may contain a mild spoiler***
Being a Jaguar fan I gave this movie 2 points just for the Shaguar joke. Which just happens to bee the only good joke until the tent scene and the final 15-10 minutes. The rest of the movie is just bad jokes and Mike Myers stretching his face saying Jeah Baby JEAH! every 5 minutes. The only interesting thing would be a documentary telling us how they pitched this movie to the studios and how they got someone to produce this TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!!!
If you are looking for a crazy comedy see The SCARY MOVIE.
X-Men (2000)
Over rated above average action movie.
Clearly the makers were afraid of going all the way but played it safe to please Hollywood and to make enough money to get the green light for a sequel.
Maybe in the up coming x-men sequel they'll go to the darker side of the comic steering away from the main steam candy coating.
X-men is true to the comic but is lacking soul or EDGE. For a reference in EDGE in a comic book adaptation movie see the BLADE.
Scary Movie (2000)
Superb comedy if you like toilet humor and dirty jokes
I had heard only the working title for this movie (scream if...) And knew its a parody before I saw it. But the RELENTLESS and nonstop pace of this movie was really surprising. virtually giving no time to recover from the last punch! The dirty jokes and gay innuendo was just hilarious. Carmen Electra also has a strong influence on my vote :) If you like insult comedy see also DOGMA.
