Melancholia (2011)
"shaky camera on a whole new level
First of all i really like "Dogville" and "Dancer In The Dark", and i'm normally not so much annoyed by the use of "shaky camera", but "Melancholia" makes movies like "Bourne Ultimatum", "Cloverfield" or "Irreversible" look like a Terrence Malick movie. This has been the first movie since a "blind preview" of "Liar Liar" with the annoying Jim Carrey some 14 years ago, that i had to walk out of a movie. I don't get it...this might have been a decent movie without this piece of ...camera. And why? To show inner turmoil and despair? That's too simple minded... or as a trademark style? O.K., but ALL the time!!? And "shaky camera" WITH zooming AND out of focus pictures?!! I'll probably have to watch "12 Angry Men" "Kikujirô no natsu" or "Visions of Light" as an antidote!
The Three Musketeers (2011)
Simple and honest escapism fun
First of all, i must admit, i'm not a big fan of Paul W.S. Andersons work. The "Resident Evil" movies are probably some of the most soulless movies there are. But i really did enjoy "The Three Musketeers". A simple honest fun adventure movie. For those guys who wine about it not being true to the book by Alexandre Dumas, after watching the trailer showing airships and "Mission Impossible" like scenes, please...what did you expect...The actors all did a fine job, even Mila Jovovich and Orlando Bloom where o.k..The mix of elements in this Movie, was quiet nice...If you like "Pirates Of the Caribean", "Le pacte des loups"/"Brotherhood of the Wolf", "Fanfan la Tulipe" (1952), Jules Verne, Steam Punk or Alan Moores "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" - comic that is, this maybe one for you...and i recommend the 3D version...
A History of Horror with Mark Gatiss (2010)
o.k., but lacking some essential horror movies
This 3 part series about the history of horror is quite entertaining, but it fails in 2 different aspects: 1. Like so many other documentaries about movies in general (even "A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies" makes this annoying mistake) it spoils a lot about the movies by revealing the ending. 2. A history of horror without even mentioning "Nosferatu" and the influence of early German cinema (movies like "Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam ","Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari") on later productions like Frankenstein etc. ...please, you must be kidding me. It also leaves out other great early "horrific" movies like "Häxan", "The Unknown" or the great "The Man Who Laughs" (who later became a great influence on the "Joker" character of the infamous "Batman" comics). This series feels like it doesn't consists on part 1,2 and 3. But on part 2,4 and 5 leaving out part 1 (early films like "nosferatu" etc), part 3 (classic and highly influential 50ies horror/sf like tarantula( only shortly mentionend),"Creature from the Black Lagoon","The Thing from Another World", "It Came from Outer Space","Them!","The Bad Seed" or "Invasion of the Body Snatchers")and part 6 (80ies horror like "The Fog", "Cannibal Holocaust", "The Evil Dead", "Poltergeist", "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "Hellraiser" or "The Thing". And maybe some 90ies horror ("Ôdishon", "Braindead", "Nightbreed"...) and recent horror like "Versus", "Eight Legged Freaks", "28 Days Later", "(Rec)" ... would have been nice too. Also, what about classic movies like "King Kong","Carnival of Souls","Village of the Damned", "Two Thousand Maniacs!", "Phase IV" or "Alien"...? A better history of horror is "Nightmares in Red, White and Blue: The Evolution of the American Horror Film"
Terminator Salvation (2009)
Waste of money
Terminator 1 is a classic, Terminator 2 is lots of fun, Terminator 3 was surprisingly really cool...but what is this?! Nothing but a waste of good money. I wonder what a real director with a real script would have accomplished with the same money...
Warning Spoiler!
No logic at all: One second Kyle Reese warns Wright not to go out at night because of infrared equipped machines, the next second they sit at a fire! Actually they like to sit a fires all the time... Then the resistance fighter don't attack Skynet, only because of Connor's bad speech, explaining nothing, and he is not even the leader of the resistance?! Come on! Love Interest: Just badly written...I don't know where to start. It kind of fits with the rest of the movie.... And what's the point of that heart thing? Please somebody explain it to me. Is it really about what defines a human being?!! Give me Bladerunner...even I Robot...or...god forgive A.I...although on second thought maybe not A.I..
V for Vendetta (2005)
They got it all wrong!
First of all, if you know and love the original comic book don't go and watch the movie! Those "matrix" dudes did not know what it was all about. They got it all wrong! The setting is wrong. Their is no feeling of total control, despair and starvation created. That sort of feeling you probably have living in a totalitarian state like north Korea today. The classic gun powder treason story is plain unnecessary. The leader is a total different character and his ending is ridiculous.
Warning Spoiler
The story about the self produced virus is laughable. Evey is also portrayed in a false matter. The only good parts in the movie are the ones that stick close to the book like Natalie Portmanns part in the fake prison. V is not killing people randomly in the comic. And they should have used the original speech for his TV announcement. With those pictures of Adolf and Mussolini. And for god's sake "V For Vendetta" is not supposed to be a love story!! For those who do not know the comic book, do not watch it either. The action sequences are shitty and have no real motivation. Go and buy the comic. It's probably in the top 5 list of every comic book fanatic. To those matrix dudes: Go and learn what a film based on a comic could have been. Watch Spider Man, Ghost World or Sin City. And PLEASE do not think of doing a film version of Watchmen, Transmetropolitan or Give Me Liberty!!
Cube 2: Hypercube (2002)
Cheap rip off of the brilliant first one!
If you have seen cube, please don't bother to watch cube 2. it's kind of a PG version, badly done. If you haven't seen cube, go and watch it! Don't waist your money and your time on this. Cube 2 has bad special effects, bad character, a bad story ... and the list goes on.
