The Vagina Monologues (2002)
For women only.
Long, tedious, and boring. This is how I (a man) found it. I do not consider myself a prude in any way, nevertheless, I found myself staring at the countdown timer on the DVD player, waiting for it to end. My original reason for watching it was because of all the hype. While some men may find it entertaining, and even humorous, be warned, most will be ejecting the DVD within the first two minutes unless your curiosity gets the better of you.
Normally, I try to have an open mind to alternative/cutting edge forms of "entertainment", however this goes beyond the limits of the typical male. Overall, this is simply feminine ranting with a comic twist. Call it a hunch, but only women would understand most of the jokes, since men do not have a frame of reference to compare to.
(Men:) Simply put, if you have not gotten into it within the first ten minutes, eject the DVD! It does not get any better. The only good(?) thing about this is that you will find out more about women than you thought possible (or probably wanted to know!)
Mazes and Monsters (1982)
A long look at what we lost
Forget the plot. There is a new and very significant reason to see this film. It gives us a good, long look at what we lost.
The last fifteen minutes of the film were filmed at the World Trade Center.
Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995)
Who are they kidding?
I have seen this before, all together too many times. A film claims that a scene was supposed to take place in one location, but in fact, was filmed somewhere else.
I have lived in Denver for over twenty years, and could only vaguely recognize a few filming locations. By comparison, the entire film reeked of L.A.
As best as I could tell, this film should have properly been called "Ten things to do in LA, if your dead, while briefly passing through Denver."
Touch of Evil (1958)
The director was wrong!
It doesn't matter what Orson Wells thought. It doesn't matter what the purests think, there was a serious mistake with the re-edited 1999 director's cut.
Hollywood legend has it that after --evil was edited by the studio, Orson wrote a very lengthy memo to studio exec's, passionately asking them not to sugar-coat his film, but to keep to his original vision. So, when it came time for the innevitible "as the director, not the studio wanted" director's cut, changes were made. Big mistake!!!
The music that originally accompanied the opening scene definitely should not have been removed. The music gave the opening scene rhythm and flow. This is why it is one of the most famous scenes in film history. Without the music, it is just another boring scene.
Swimming with Sharks (1994)
Satire or real?
Having actually worked for a control-freak, manipulative, boss from Hell, this film is an all too real depiction of what it is really like. The boss character accurately depicts exactly how a obsessive control freak boss acts.
What is really scarry (if you have never worked for one) the form of revenge depicted could really happen!!! They will eventually drive you that crazy. This film is a must view for anyone considering a job with a dispicable, controlling boss!!!!!!
Kings and Desperate Men (1981)
Worse than a hangover
The director or director of photography, or some other "genius" used the tired old trick of letting the camera be the eyes of one of the characters. Unfortunately, this, combined with "disembodied voices" makes watching this film remind one of a really bad alcoholic hangover!
Given the choice between watching this turkey and a real hangover, ...I'm out the door to the nearest liquor store!
