Red Dog (2011)
A True Blue Aussie Hero
I was lucky enough to see this movie in Western Australia.....the home of Red Dog. More than that, my West Australian wife grew up in Dampier and remembers a period of four or five days, where Red Dog decided to grace her family home with his presence...enjoying the steak dinners provided by my Father in Law. He then decided it was time to go, and moved on to another family. This is only one account of Red Dog, his story legendary, but no less true for that! This movie is a very uplifting true story, not only of Red Dog, but of a small community living on the 'frontier.' In an extremely harsh environment, Red Dog brought the community together. The movie conveys very well what it was like to live in Dampier in the '70s. The movie has some very sad and moving episodes, but also some real 'laugh out loud' moments. In the end, rather than feeling sad, I felt it was a celebration of a very special animal. The movie was so good, I ALMOST awarded a score of 10/10...pity I can't award 9.5/10.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Tolkien's Vision Realised
The bones of Tolkien's vision made flesh! When I first read this wonderful tale over 30 years ago my vivid imagination could not have bettered this depiction in film! To say that this movie is 'true to the book' is indeed a complement..and it is! Well done!
The Mummy Returns (2001)
Action All The Way
If you are looking for intellectual stimulation why would you go to a movie called "The Mummy Returns"?
What you do get with this movie is action, effects and good (if lightweight) entertainment.
Spy Kids (2001)
Kids Will Love It
Wow - all those primary colours!
Anyway, kids will love it - and parents will find more to entertain them than the normal kiddie fare.
Nice junior spoof on the spy genre with appropriate special effects.
Miss Congeniality (2000)
Dirty Harriet Rocks
Sandra Bullock is back to her brilliant best in this excellent movie. This is not by any means Oscar material but it is a very entertaining, good fun film, with lots of memorable one liners.
Sandra's performance is tremendous, but there is also a strong supporting cast, with great performances all round. Michael Caine, in particular, deserves a special mention. Great Movie!
The Gift (2000)
Go See This Movie
"The Gift" is a psychic thriller. Although it has a couple of scary moments, it is not an out and out thriller, but it loses nothing because of that.
It has a really good storyline and excellent performances from a very convincing cast. Basically, it centres on a woman who has "The Gift" of being able to see things that have happened, or are to happen, who becomes involved in a disappearance, which becomes a murder investigation........Go see it!
Finding Forrester (2000)
Feel Good
Despite being fairly predictable, this is a very worthwhile feel-good movie with great performances from a good cast and, in particular, from Sean Connery and Rob Brown.
Sean puts in perhaps his best performance to date, and Rob Brown shows that he has great potential for the future. Go see it!
What Women Want (2000)
Don't Listen To The Critics - Go See This Movie
Personally, when I go to see a movie, I go to be entertained - reading some of the other comments about it, I wonder why THEY bother to go. An exercise in analysis perhaps ?
This movie was excellent, with good performances all round. Helen Hunt and Mel Gibson worked very well together, with chemistry in abundance, and good support from Alan Alda, Marissa Tomei and Bette Midler.
As for being overlong, the two and a bit hours were over before I realised it. Don't listen to the 'expert' put-downs of this movie - if you go to the movies for enjoyment then this is for you.
Pay It Forward (2000)
Complete Movie
The last time I saw Kevin Spacey in a movie it was the much lauded, and much hyped, "American Beauty". I could never understand the furore surrounding this film - in my opinion it was boring and overhyped.
"Pay It Forward" is the movie that "AB" should have been. There are outstanding performances all round, and a great storyline. The central idea is so simple, but so brilliant, and the way that its spread throughout the country is portrayed is very well done. If only 'pay it forward' worked in the real world!
I have read criticism of this film that the ending is overly 'smaltzy', but I can't agree - it is entirely in keeping with the rest of the film, and entirely appropriate. A great movie - don't miss it!
