A Hora Marcada (2000)
Surprisingly good.
When you watch a Brazilian movie, you really don't know what to expect. Gracindo Júnior and Osmar Prado are just perfect and the direction is really good, altough there are some holes on the script.
The story is about mean man who meets a woman and she tells him he's going to die seven years later. When that day comes, he gets kidnapped by a former employee who has been arrested after trying to cheat on him. In the hideout, the mysterious woman shows up again and he realizes that she's probably Death itself. Now he has to deal with the kidnappers and death.
Humor, action and sensuality are also well employed by Marcelo Taranto on this movie. Note: this is his first motion picture.
Hannibal (2001)
Neither Blood Not Suspense
I was really disappointed to see this movie. I didn't know what to expect, but I was told - BY ITS PRESS BOOK - that there would be a lot of blood and flesh and so on. This, with a good script, can possibly mean a good film. So, I went to see it and, for my surprise, this was one of the most predictable films I've ever seen. From the beginning, I knew who was going to die, who was going to succeed etc. So, I hoped there would be a lot of blood. But... no! Some intestines and brains, I expected something disgusting, that would make me throw up all my popcorn. All I got was hungry after a very boring film. Don't waste your time and money.
Central do Brasil (1998)
The best ever from Brazil
Walter Sales has managed how to show an unknown Brazil to the whole world in a very emotive story. Academy Nominee and winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin Fernanda Montenegro is absolutely tremendous, as usual. Too bad that very few people from outside Brazil know her.
