Seutateueob (2020)
Great K-Drama Series
Instantly relatable story of tech entrepreneurs, great cinematography, killer soundtrack, 2 popular leads - probably best K-Drama series of the year!
Ignore the so-called love triangle that never was as it was always between the 2 main leads, this drama succeeds in it's telling of overcoming challenges on the way to realizing your dreams, albeit with a swoon worthy romance between the leads.
Highly recommended!
The Two Popes (2019)
Wow
Wow, just Wow! Excellent movie and Bravo to Netflix! We need more of these types of movies. Easily the best of the year!
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Good enough
Against elevated expectations, it was never likely to achieve that. But as the final part of the new trilogy, it stands on its own.
It was not perfect but so too were all the previous 8 movies of the Skywalker saga. Some parts felt a bit rushed but overall it was a good enough ending to the saga.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Over to you, MCU Phase 4
After the poignant ending of EndGame, the baton has passed on the next phase of the MCU franchise. I just hope Marvel Studios can just match what they have given us here.
The character driven moments in EndGame is what set it apart from the other Avengers movies to-date. Just go and watch it not for the spectacle that we expect but for the many characters many of us have grown accustomed to.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Grossly under-rated
There are not a whole ton of action sequences except towards the end - it's the moments of human interaction between Superman and his family that carries the movie above many fast moving super hero movies. I rated it lower the first I saw him but on second viewing 2 years later, this movie actually grew on me.
Daredevil (2015)
The best!
Daredevil works because the viewers are invested in the all the main characters. While Charlie Cox's Daredevil portrayal is great, Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk elevates this series to be among the best from Netflix. He conducts his "business" on an operatic scale, complete with such music when he contemplates his next moves. Here is a master chef in his element.
Even the supporting characters have their story arcs fleshed out. While the action scenes are great and gritty, watch this for the character driven masterpiece it is.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Great watch
The Hobbit is well-paced, starts with more of a back-story and introduction of the main characters before exploding with an action-packed second half. I can't remember all the little details from the book but the arc of the movie follows the book closely, which in my opinion is good.
Most of the actors carried off their roles well but the one that stood out for me was Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The movie version of Thorin has a lot more steel than the one in the book. Although Bilbo Baggins is the main character of this story, Peter Jackson has done a good job of fleshing out the main characters, giving enough screen time to each of them, especially Gandalf and Thorin.
Would definitely recommend The Hobbit - I will watch it again myself, this time on 48fps format!
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
A Great End to A Great Film
I thought the ending perfectly captures the spirit of Tolkien's greatest work - it brought tears to many in the theater where I was sitting. What a way to end probably the most enduring of modern film classics and epics.
The battle scenes were incredible to say the least - what else can I say that have not been said by others!
For good measure, I brought a buddy who had not watch any movie for years and by the end, he said he's got to watch parts 1 & 2 and 3 (again) - that's how good ROTK was.
A movie to end all movies.
Hotaru no haka (1988)
Wonderful - Greatest of all Anime!
I've become a fan of Anime since Spirited Away and have been gobbling up on Studio Ghibli's wonderful anime collection. Many of these are so much better than what we get from Disney and the like but none of this prepard me for the Grave of The Fireflies.
This is such an emotional and powerful movie for its poignant depiction of those innocents afflicted by war. It reminds us that in any war, many innocents are caught in the cross-fire between any opposing forces - and couldn't have come at a better time especially at a time of war.
Definitely the best of Studio Ghibli's collection, and the best anime/cartoon of all time.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Grips you!
The expectations set by The Fellowship Of The Ring was always going to be a huge mountain to climb. After watching the The Two Towers, I believe Peter Jackson has outdone himself with the second installment of the Rings saga.
The Two Towers connects better emotionally - and the movie moves along at a gripping pace. From the opening scene of Gandalf's battle with the Balrog, I could already tell that this was going to be one of the best movies of this decade. The switch between the 3 main story threads were well-handled.
I thought that Gollum was very well done although you can still discern it's a CGI character. But it's the closest a CGI character has come to be a human - think what will happen in 5 years!
And now on to the Return Of The King - this one may just become the Lord Of All Movies. Can't wait.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Better than Episode 1
Saw Episode II - AOTC at a special showing. Definitely better than Episode 1. Action sequences and sets are great, which has been George Lucas' strength. However, his weakness is using actors who came with good reputations - Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor has won praises for other movies before this but their acting in this movie leaves some room for improvement. Hayden Christensen just tries too hard but falls far short of say, Elijah Wood's performance in LOTR: FOTR. It says a lot for the acting when one of the best sequences had Yoda doing a Jackie Chan turn.
That said, as a package, AOTC is more in line with Episodes IV to VI, where the audience will feel more involved with the Star Wars universe developments. More non-Star Wars fans are going to watch this by word-of-mouth.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Absorbing, Fantastic Adaptation of the Book
I went to see FOTR with the expectations that it must have been hard to translate Tolkien's masterpiece into a major cinematic experience. So what Peter Jackson did was incredible. His adaptation of Tolkien was crisp, he focused on the key points of the story, which in essence was Frodo's journey to Mordor to destroy the ring without losing too much in dispensing of some situations and characters. Totally following the book would have rendered a 3-hour movie impossible and would have been saddled with parts that would not have appealed to those who have not read the books.
The three hours passed pretty fast - without any reservations, the first cinematic adaptation of Tolkien's masterpiece was totally absorbing, making it the best fantasy epic of all time.
