Superman (1988)
Up, up, and away...
24 August 2004
I was lucky to find the whole season of this wonderful series. This is one of if not the best Superman cartoon ever. Before Bruce Timm's work there was Ruby Spears and this Superman series. The series uses the song from the Salkind and Donner directed movie which is great because it's one of those memorable themes in pop culture. Don't know why they didn't use it for Superman: The Animated Series. Wonder Woman makes an appearance in the series too and it's great how they bring about Lois Lane's jealousy towards the Amazon. When watching this it's almost as if a comic has come to life and started moving on screen, this may have to do with some comic book people being on the staff of the series, one to mention is Marv Wolfman. Each episode ended with a look into a young Clark's life, but it's more of Superboy's life than Superman's cause in these segments baby Clark is already flying. Too bad not too many people remember this series, if you ever get a chance to watch it, do, cause it's worth it.

Meltdown (2004 TV Movie)
Great hook, a nuclear power plant melting down
6 June 2004
The editing in this movie was rather unusual. They kept fading in and fading out. The hand held camera work didn't really work for me, too much made me dizzy. And the choice to go black and white at times was uncalled for, at first I thought it was for the "terrorists" to gather information but then out of nowhere it would just go because. The main terrorist has been in The Mummy and Darkman now he's playing another bad guy. The character of Shea is rather over the top I'm not sure if someone like that would really be in the FBI, and he's the senator in Rules of Engagement. Also the actions of the anti terrorist team were rather harsh, you'd think they'd be a little more controlled.

Over all it was enjoyable watching.

Star Trek: Enterprise: Broken Bow, Part 1 (2001)
Season 1, Episode 1
The prequel to Star Trek
27 September 2001
Just saw Enterprise: Broken Bow, and I would have to say that it is different. It's like one hundred years before Kirk and it's interesting to see how Starfleet gets to where we know it. The uniforms are different than the standard color coordination that Star Trek has used before. It's more of a more military look. The starship shots are all computer generated, on The Next Generation they used models, boy I miss that. Great way to start off a new show, especially when they used the transporter on a human for the first time. The show looks to be promising from this pilot.

Defenders of the Earth (1986–1991)
Flash Gordon with the Phantom fight Ming.
10 August 2001
Defenders of the Earth gathered hero like Flash Gordon and the Phantom to fight Ming and his forces. However the Defenders had kids or something, Flash has a son named Rick. The Phantom has a daughter with the black panther or puma. Then there's a magician and some guy with rope and there are two more kids too. A lot of this show revolves around the kids, similar to the Mister T cartoon. It's your typical cartoon with kids. They fight, get into trouble, then find a lesson in it all.

Bionic Six (1987)
We are a family, I fight for them they fight for me...
1 April 2001
Like most of the cartoons in the 80's Bionic Six had a great pilot episode and a memorable theme song, who could forget that, with great animation. Bionic Six was about a family of super charged individuals fighting Scarab and his hench men. Prof. Sharp gave the Benett's their powers and his brother Scarab was their arch enemy. The animation when they said "Bionics onnnnnnn" and put their rings to their wrist bands was always a treat to watch. You had a family fighting crime and evil while balancing their own family and their outside normal life, while you had a brother fighting his brother with super humans. Man what writing. Young and old can enjoy this at so many levels, too bad Cartoon Network doesn't run anything else but Scooby Doo. If you ever have a chance to watch Bionic Six don't hesitate.

Bionic Six (1987)
We are a Family, I fight for them they fight for me...
30 March 2001
What a wonderful opening theme song. In the 80's just about all the cartoons had catchy memorable theme songs, I wonder what happened. Bionic Six like anything from the 80's had a beautifully animated pilot episode. Bionic 1 was the first and then he took his family on a ski trip, while on the trip aliens landed and the family got caught in an avalanche. Bionic 1 brought his family to Prof. Sharp, and the only way to save the family was to give them Bionics. Prof. Sharp had a brother and his brother was the arch villain of the series, named Scarab. Wonderful writing, brother against brother, family fighting together side by side. Enjoyable for anyone young or old, you can enjoy it at many different levels.

Big Guy and Rusty make big smash
3 March 2001
Big Guy and Rusty is one of the best cartoons out there today. I read that someone related it to "Gigantor" meets "Astro Boy". The show is filled with voices you wouldn't think of doing a cartoon. R. Lee Ermey is General Thorton, he's still doing military roles but not like his known drill sgt. Stephen Root and Kathy Kinney are Donovan and Jenny, Stephen is Jimmy James from, "News Radio" and Kathy is Mimi from "The Drew Carey Show." Clancy Brown was recently in "Starship Troopers" and now he's all four voices of the Legion in the cartoon. The Big Guy is funny as he dishes out lines like "Who wants pie? Piping hot," with his guns drawn. The placement of his guns are humor enough, they look like arm pit cannons, and when he's not using his guns he's doing wrestling like moves to pummel the bad guys. Looking at the comic book, the animated version looks pretty good. Big metropolitan looking Neutronic City with the Shiny Big Guy and Rusty the boy robot guarding it against disaster. The Big Guy is patriotic while Rusty is learning the ropes of saving lives. With their number one rule, "Robots don't harm humans." This is a wonderful show with humor left and right, enough for the kids and the adults to enjoy. I hope we get more episodes or seasons, or more shows like this.

Gundam Wing is nothing to this.
25 December 2000
With all the craze over the Gundam Wing and Endless Waltz, people are so swept up in the hype that they don't know that there is another Gundam. Wing and Endless Waltz is an alternate Gundam universe, like when comics to the "what if" issue. 0083 has a collection of romance, action, politics, and amazing music and animation. The Japanese always try to put lots of little stories and elements into one thing. This makes it enjoyable for all. 0083 follows the original Gundam story line and the Gundams in the movie are more realistic than Wing. Wing has all these swords, blades and close combat weapons. But if you think about it Gundams are like big walking tanks. If you were to make a Gundam you would put guns, missiles, and long range weapons as opposed to swords. It starts of right away with test pilots and a secret mission then blasts off in to space. 0083 is a military based story with all of life's inconveniences. Like all anime you see the main character's problems and trials, but through it all you are bombarded with rock music and beautiful animation. The characters in 0083 don't sound like robots in Wing, they have more character and personality. And think about it, why would kids be driving Gundams? Let's get real, if you want Gundam for more mature people that takes a brain to understand it check out Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. The best so far.

Pryde of the X-Men (1989 TV Movie)
This one time deal left me wanting more.
17 December 2000
This one time deal left something to be desired. I remember this show coming on during the Marvel Action Hour with Robocop, Dino Riders, and something else, possibly Spiderman. X-men was made by Sunbow, the powerhouse of the 80's, so the voices were some of the same people heard in GI Joe. The story of is fast paced and reads like a comic strip with action left and right. The black bird looks better than the recent futuristic versions out there. They also stay very close to the comic unlike other versions. This one timer was probably just to promote the video game, but it should have been a series. Who knows what would've happened if it was a series, it sure would have been better than the newer versions now.
