Very bad
2 October 2022
Very bad. Trying to emulate a certain director's style, pacing and dialogue but failing so miserably. Even the choice of music was bad. Brad's Pitt is always going to be Brad Pitt no matter what movie he is in. Would've been fine if he was still a looker but that's all gone. That irritating "lead" actress's attempt at an English accent deserves a -47/100. I'm not Japanese but I felt like they were also disrespectful of Japanese culture and people. Heck it was even disrespectful of Japanese toilets. The other actors deserved a lot better than this material. Yes, even Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I didn't mind Channing Tatum too much but that this better be the last time he tries this schtick. Overall a waste of time.

Even less than I expected
14 May 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't expecting much from this remake. The trailer wasn't particularly exciting and there weren't any real big name stars in the cast. But there I was on a lazy Thursday afternoon with nothing to do and I decided to give this movie a try.

First off, the ship in the opening shot looks so fake. The movie then plunges immediately into action with minimal back story on the main characters. This makes empathy for the characters real difficult. Corny dialogue. One can also figure out quite quickly which of the characters get to die first. It's a guy with a non-Caucasian surname.

The special effects weren't that special. It did bring back the horrible images from the tsunami.

The "suspense-filled" scenes weren't exciting. You just know they were going to make it. Give or take another non-Caucasian character.

As corny as Titanic was, it still had the best ship-sinking sequences I've seen.

Overall, a waste of time.

Disappointing
6 September 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Finally got to watch this one on the big screen as part of Cinemanila. After hearing so much about it, I have to say that I was disappointed. Sentimental movies are no problem with me but this one wasn't very good. The storytelling was confusing and I couldn't feel the passion between the characters. The "love scenes" were awkward and well, passionless. Watch out for that shower scene and cringe. Hell, that cheesy love scene in Titanic (the one with the steamed up windows in the car) was better.

Shu Qi is wasted here. We could have done without her character. Acting-wise, the main actors were not that proficient. Pity, a lot of wasted chances.

As expected
30 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Just watched it yesterday and it was pretty much what I expected. Mindless with lots of explosions, CGI and bad writing and acting. The actors could certainly have done better but I guess there was no way they could have given the script. Thankfully, we only need to blame one person for "writing" that wretched piece.

Another thing also got my attention. You have a white man, a white woman and a black man. One of them gets to die. Hazard a guess who that would be? A few minutes into the movie, I just knew what would happen.

Rob Cohen directed The Fast and the Furious and I enjoyed that movie. It was mindless for sure but it was fun. This movie isn't. Top Gun was better, cheesy as it was.

Underwhelmed
6 July 2005
I went and saw this movie with no expectations. It's a summer film so I'm not getting my hopes up. I was underwhelmed. As usual there were the big set pieces and decent SFX but nothing ground breaking. There's no "How did they do that?" moment. Well, maybe except for The Thing's obviously not-CGI suit, which is a good thing. Michael Chiklis is the best thing about this movie, acting-wise or otherwise. The movie seemed rushed. Lots of continuity problems. Stretching it to 2 hours wouldn't hurt. I guess the studio had to consider viewers's short attention spans. What a shame. After many summers of comic-based movies, you'd think they'd do better every year. At least this movie is not Elektra or Catwoman or Hulk. It wasn't bad but wasn't great either.

Lethargic
22 July 2003
Wasn't bowled over by the first Tomb Raider movie but at least Lady Croft moved the way she did in the game. This movie is even more lethargic than the first. Ms. Jolie looks better here but somehow you feel that she's bored by the whole thing. The premise had great potential but they blew their chance.

Beautiful to look at but boring
11 July 2001
Saw the movie an hour ago and had mixed feelings. The CGI was amazing ! This probably has the best approximation of real human skin complete with pores and lines and even freckles ! Machine animation was also top-notch. Too bad all the effort did not seem to extend to the storyline. This is anime but not as well put together (not the level of Ghost in the Shell or Princess Monokoke). However do watch this movie as a peak into the future of animation.
