Manhunt (2017)
First season incredible, second season=💩
The Richard Jewel story is good enough on its own, don't know why all this "fluff" had to be added in.. The different perspective was actually a nice, but it's completely offset by the lead FBI agent who's dumber than a tree stump and has the attitude of a turtle.
The acting is good and believable, but they ruin this by acting out a scene, then explaining what they just acted out in the very next scene. I mean wtf.. this series treats the viewer as if they are 5 years old.
Like previously stated: first season is good, second season is like upside down world.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
If Wes Anderson wrote/directed Black Mirror
Is this show equal to Black Mirror? No, not even close; but I'd be lying if I said there wasn't hints of it in this series and I'm tying to give you a reference point to gauge whether or not it's worth your time to watch. There's cynicism and humor, but nothing that makes you scratch your head wondering if it's possible; except the time period of which this series is set in.
So again, if you can dig Wes Anderson's films and binge watch episodes of Black Mirror, there's a very high probability you'll be interested in this series. Good luck.
Becky (2020)
To the person who said: "John Wick meets Home Alone"
I salute you! Solid description and went into this movie because of that review, thank you.
The death scenes were also unique yet gory enough to wonder if it's even possible, but the story was underwhelming; I kind of wished there was more to it. It's not the horror movie where you will be so scared that you sleep with the lights on. Enjoy!!
Warrior Nun (2020)
Skip e2 through e7
Episode 2 through episode 7 are nonsense that must've been needed to fulfill a contractually obligated 10 episode season. You can watch the series without them and wouldn't miss a thing. If you don't believe me, have had it, but don't say I didn't warn you.
Lots of inconsistencies in the story, but I wasn't excepting a 'Dark' level type of a series here. I was in the mood for something new and this is what I stuck with. Those episodes 2 through 7 really made me upset as to why or who thought it was a good idea to use those. There's absolutely no new info or context added to the story or plot, no new info or insight about any of the characters, and there's no surprises or thrills. It's like lighting off a firework that does nothing. Why?
Charlie's Angels (2019)
Not a bad movie, but not great.
I watch a lot of bad movies because I'm a sick individual who loves them and this definitely doesn't fit in that genre. This movie reminds me of those generic medication commercials you see on TV with that sped up voice at the end listing all the side effects.
Charlie's angels has been done many times and I was hoping Elizabeth Banks would bring something new to the table. This director knows how to act and knows how to direct a movie, but it felt like this director was being hand held by a Hollywood executive while making it. It was too on the nose Hollywood. Someone needs to give Elizabeth Banks a paint brush to let her do her own thing because I'm sure we'd get some magic from her.
Next is Kristen Stewart. She seems cool and someone I would get along with in real life, but in this movie; it's almost as if she hated being there. The whole time, with the exception of a few scenes, she seemed to be totally over that movie and wanted to move on. Maybe this wasn't the case, but it's how I interpreted her acting in this film. Part of me wanted to yell at her and the other part wanted to reach out and give her a hug.
The plot was predictable and exactly like the other Charlie's angel movies. I liked the end where they showed clips of the new recruit during training too. Overall I rate this movie a solid 5 as I'm on the fence. I did enjoy watching it, but it's not a movie I'd likely watch again. I wasn't expecting it to be that kind of movie anyways, so no harm done.
Dark (2017)
June 27th 2020 apocalypse
How do I even begin to sum up my experience watching this series? I feel like I've been giving a key to ancient knowledge, but it's in liquid form that's needs to be solidified using atmospheric pressure while maintaining a super critical mass.
I don't think a flux capacitor or Doc Brown could solve this riddle wrapped in an enigma. Starting S3, I felt as if I was driving on the wrong side of the road in a bad dream I couldn't wake up from. Kudos to the writers. Good luck on your journey friend.
This series is right up there with Chernobyl as far as quality. You metaphorically see an artist start a painting from a blank canvas to a masterpiece. We are so fortunate to live in a time where we have access to media like this. Grab a drink, relax, and get ready to have your brain molested by a series of digital moving pictures.
ZeroZeroZero (2019)
Narcos meets Crash thriller
Multilingual thriller series that follows the route of a cocaine shipment from inception to delivery. Immediately kept me engaged and interested in what was going to happen next and story telling was superb. Having double perspective between the different characters following the same story line was also intriguing, but after awhile did start to get overused. I thought the acting was on point and some of the graphic scenes made me winch away from watching; ie a la pig. Definitely worth a watch if you're into the violent, mob, drug cartel type of films/series. Had a Narcos meets Crash kinda of a vibe.
Cons: very little character development, which wasn't a bad thing, but would've been nice to dive a bit deeper into at least the main characters. It leaves a feeling of wanting more and to really know who these people are, especially with the Mexican Special Forces guys.
The ending was a little bland as well. It gave you a conclusion, but it wasn't a high packed or paced as the rest of the series. It was a coming off the climax and that's about it. Maybe giving hope for another season?
Lastly the entire plot is based off an envious grandkid. That's the entire plot and everything stems from this. No this isn't a spoiler as it's the first scene and first minute of this series. I wish there was more to it than that.
Overall 7/10 worth a watch
Locke & Key (2020)
This should be good
I like the story and the magical keys. I was hooked, but these characters are incredibly stupid that it makes it unbearable to watch at times. Stupid things like leaving a gun next to a bad guy who's on the ground being attacked and disabled or bringing a magical key to your house where a demon lives knowing it will make them stronger. It's like these characters are filled with hot air by choice.
That said, I did stick through it and watched the whole thing. Idk why. This is just a random review from a random dude. Be your own source and watch it yourself.
The Outsider (2020)
It's Steven King and Jason Bateman.. you'll be hooked
Imagine if The X-files and True Detective had a baby then Sinister and Thinner had a baby, then those two babies met and had a baby.. you'd get The Outsider.
You give Jason Bateman a paint brush and some Steven King writing, you're going to get 100% pure heroin of a tv series. It's a series that will hook you from the first minute. It's not too fast pace, but not too slow either; the rhythm is just right. You get lost into the story like a junkie on a binge of their drug of choice. I've been wondering wth was taking so long for Ozarks S3, but I stopped caring after watching this.
Secondly, Ben Mendelsohn (A Place Beyond the Pines) and Bill Camp (The Night Of) are a brilliant actors that bring this story to another level. Absolutely phenomenal performances here. Kudos
The cinematography is on par with any HBO series. It follows a similar outline that we are all familiar with. It's good because it works at setting the scene, the mood, and giving the correct information as to not leave the audience in the dark. It's very easy to follow and leaves you wanting more in a sophisticated way. There's no hype climax at the end of each episode, like other sub par series.
Jason Bateman & Steven King, thank you!
9/10 as of now S1E5
Uncut Gems (2019)
The Sandman Delivers
Very skeptic about this movie. Adam Sandler starring role and critics like the film is as funny as a screen door on a battleship. Beyond Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison, Punch Drunk Love was actually pretty good. Maybe the hype is real? It's real.
Two words to describe this film: anxiety and stress. I felt these two things throughout the entire movie as though as I was a part of the plot. It's the same feeling you get when you hate the bad guy in a film. The story starts off smooth and then goes to 100 in a seconds. You empathize for the character, but also feel envious of the character. How can this guy have all these nice things and yet be such a mess?
Props to Rest of the cast Kevin Garnett, Lakeith Stanfield, Julia Fox, and Idina Menzel.
1917 (2019)
Superb cinematography and directing
This is a movie that you really have to see in the theater to be fully immersed into the story and see the incredible details. I was at awe frame to frame and felt like I was there in France, on the front lines, in 1917. It's incredible to think what it must've been like living in a trench with a single action rifle waiting for your commanding officer to tell an order that could be your last. These men just did it and without questions, raised their rifles together to fight an enemy. It's something that I question if I had the guts to do myself if places were switched.
What was more incredible was the cinematography that appeared to have no cuts. It was as if the story was told in real time, through one fluid shot. The way they transitioned the flow time while keeping the perspective of the characters as a linear shot was beautiful. Hands down awesome.
The story had some slow parts, but it was easy to follow and flowed nicely, which made the action scenes feel more intense. You felt as if it was life or death. I rate this a 7.9/10, is it the next Saving Private Ryan? No, even though the story has similar characteristics; it is it's own thing.
Sex Education (2019)
Entertaining, witty, and educational
This jumps off the page for me because it tackles the taboo of sex in a clever way through humor. It's very easy to be crude with sex related comedy, but the writers took a different approach. It's done in a very round about way to connect back into to the story or character. This makes the story very believable and opens your mind to explore sex in an educational way.
The story follows a young high school male who's inexperience in sexual activities, brings on new adventures and dilemmas. The supporting cast, including his mother (Gillian Anderson), add another substance that makes the entire story work and come together. It's incredibly weird to see Gillian Anderson in this type of comedic roll, but she really pulls it off.
Overall, easy to binge, medium pace, simple and to the point.
I See You (2019)
Nice creepy thriller
Thought it was a horror film, but was surprised when it took a great turn. It's an original movie with a well written story. Definitely worth a watch if you have 90 minutes to kill. I did find it a little predictable. No, I didn't know where the story was going; but I saw the antagonist from a mile away once I realized what was going on. It's always the person you least except. There's only so many ways to tell a story and I'm not knocking on it. I dig it and I give 7/10 imaginary internet points. On to the next.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Better than all those other marvel movies
I use to enjoy super hero movies, until lately. Don't get me wrong, I watched Infinity wars and endgame too. I'm just saying they have a very corporate vibe to them.
Into the spider verse felt like a real comic book. It felt like someone who actually read the comic books wrote this movie. It was a real pleasure to watch and I hope we see more work from these people. 8/10
Freaks (2018)
An unpredictable original film
Never saw press or trailers for this one, just saw my man Emile Hirsch as the lead and I was in. This actor usually doesn't disappoint and I was willing to leap into this blindly.
Well executed film with an original idea. Don't want to divulge too deeply into this movie as it will ruin it for any newbs out there. The story kept me guessing and I was always wrong. As an avid movie buff, it becomes easier to predict how a story will ride. This was unpredictable and kept me engaged. I like the concept because it's totally believable. If this movie was irl, I would bet money on it that this would be normal. 8/10 for me.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
Incredibly well movie and still as good in 2019
First time ever seeing this film and I'm glad I watched it. I totally forgot that this movie was made in the 1940s while watching. The story is amazing and will be watching again.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Shouldn't watched this years ago
I just watched this movie in 2019. Glad I did and you should too.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
I love this movie
There's really no plot here. It's a movie about a girl and a window into her world. I wanted to live in her world and wanted to be with her. It reminds us not to take things to seriously and never loose your inner self.
Watched this a few times already. I'm finding myself liking French films a lot.
The Report (2019)
Educational, eye opening, different POV
Didn't know this happened. Didn't know about this story, even though I was alive when it took place. Maybe I was too young or too dumb? Yes, the CIA water boarded people without ever training or researching these techniques to show they are effective. Was it torture, yes, was it the worse thing we could do, no. Another POV might think any other country would do worse to a USA POW, including cutting off their heads. Which makes you think why would the characters in this movie whistleblow this information?
It's eye opening and it gives you a perspective to another point of view. Keep an open mind and let your brain soak this story as it happened.
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Bates Motel meet Aubrey Plaza's awkwardness
I watched the first season and loved it, then a year or two went by and I forgot all about this show. One day I remember this show with a sad guy who lives in a weird house and steals a car and can't remember the name of this show. I try Reddit and my search my Netflix/prime watch history to no avail. Then one day, Netflix suggests this show with a new season and eureka.. it's the show!! What are the chances!!
Anyways, I liked it and binged this series. It has a Jason Bateman-esque vibe to it. Juno meets Bates motel maybe. Try it out.
12 Angry Men (1957)
Great movie about people and guilty until proven innocent.
This movie was made well before I was born, but the story couldn't be more relevant today. My takeaway from this movie is we all have our own influences based on our lives and sometimes we are way too quick to judge based on this. Even if the evidence is overwhelmingly against someone, they are still innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Something that seems to be drifting away here in the year 2019.
Overall, well made movie that makes you rethink how we in 2019 act.
Busanhaeng (2016)
I liked it, you probably will too.
I'm not a horror film buff, but I still like to watch them on occasion; especially foreign films. This movie came onto my radar via Reddit and wasn't disappointed. I was engaged and glued to the screen the entire movie.
The story was good, the acting was good too. The thing about hype is it sets this imaginary bar in our heads to be as good as movies we adore and think are the best of the best. In reality, these movies never fully hit that bar you're looking for. Go in with in open mind and watch this pretty good horror film.
The Two Popes (2019)
Good story, educational.
This was entertaining for me as someone who's somewhere between an atheist and a holly roller. Had no idea Pope Benedict was an actual Nazi. No, not those neo Nazi terrorists, a real German Nazi during WW2. I'm sure you're asking, but can't people change and forgiving? Yes they can, but then this dude tried covering up priests. Instead of turning them over to authorities; moved them around from place to place while they racked up victim after victim. This Pope had his chance for forgiveness and just spat into everyone's face instead.
Overall the story was good. It's a movie about people and their stories. If this sounds like a movie you like, it'll be worth while.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Worth a watch
Scrolled by this a million times and actually enjoyed it. A few short stories merged into one movie. Would recommend.
Nikki Glaser: Bangin' (2019)
5/10 roentgen not great, not terrible
It's not great, but not terrible either. She's recently been on a few podcasts I listen to: JRE, Bert, YMH, etc. and I found her to be extremely funny and captivating to listen to. It's not just the sex stuff, it's the flow of the conversations and the way she tells a story that got me hooked. I wish this special was more of what I heard on podcasts. She did say she has no rhythm and you can 100% feel that. Maybe that's why people are turned off by it. The laughs from the audience seemed lower volume too. Idk if the was done in post production or they never mic'd the room or she just didn't get big laughs from people? The stage and lighting was excellent and she looked banging af up there. The content was good too. It wasn't bad comedy either. As a straight male, most of it grossed me out, but that's what I loved about it.
I'm not a critic or some comedy genius. I'm some dude on the internet and Nikki is way more successful than me. She knows what she's doing and is funny. She wouldn't be where she is today if she wasn't funny. Sometimes things just don't hit that level you're excepting and this special is what that is. I give a 5/10.
