Les Thibault (1972)
A series of major importance
Because Henri Sauguet wrote a remarkable score, because Louis Guilloux wrote an almost frighteningly sober adaptation and terse dialogue, because the actors are excellent, this series goes beyond adaptation: it is a new creation based on Martin du Gard's masterpiece (1940). It is possible to miss this beautiful work, but one must avoid criticizing without analyzing.
Emily in Paris (2020)
Not even a caricature
The director of this series despises so much the intelligence of his Anglo-Saxon (or not) viewers that he doesn't even make the effort to produce one of theses very amusing caricatures of the French, which -from Minnelli to Wilder- are a Hollywood specialty we all love (Anglo-Saxon or not) : he only distills a vague contempt for the outside world.
All the characters and dialogues are treated like statuettes frozen in their smile or in their anger, only the dresses bring a semblance of life to this series.
