Book of Monsters (2018)
Popcorn Schlock with Heart
I backed this low budget movie on Kickstarter almost two years ago and now that I finally have my copy I'm glad I did. This is far from a serious, scary horror movie but is more a schlocky popcorn film that gives us girls with chainsaws fighting monsters. The monster effects are pretty good for the budget but with some of the scenes where the monsters are killing and eating people the editing is a bit too fast for my liking. Look, we know it's low budget but that doesn't mean you have to edit down every single shot of the monsters! That isn't a huge issue though as the three lead girls are all great considering they are unknown actors and the film is shot well and doesn't have that usual low budget shaky camera look you usually get. By the end of the film I was proud to have been a backer and I wouldn't mind seeing more of the story in a sequel.
Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Incredible Anthology with a Twist
This movie has become a bit of a cult favourite in recent years and that's down to how devilishly clever each of the little stories are. Taking place over one Halloween night with interwoven narratives, the film shows us some great little movies before tying it all together at the end. Here's hoping for a sequel!
The Blob (1988)
Still gives me Nightmares
An alien blob of slime invades a town and literally digests people. I saw this when I was young and it scared the hell out of me. The practical FX are horrific to this day and showing this to your kids should get you locked up for child abuse! Anyway, it's a cracking monster horror movie and one I now revisit often. A fun cast of now recognisable faces and some incredible kills to boot!
Critters (1986)
Schlocky Fun
A movie about balls of fluff eating people whilst being chased by retro shapeshifting aliens. If that's your bag then this is up your street. Fun effects and goofy horror make this a very entertaining movie.
