Unfrosted (2024)
Based on a historical event
I rather enjoyed this movie, which was based on the rivalry between Kellogg and Post. While it was based off the rivalry, and featured the characters of both Kellogg and Marjorie Post, that's where the similarities end, with the rest being fictional.
This movie came to be after Jerry and his co-writer, Spike, had an inside joke about writing a movie based on Pop-Tart, Jerry's favourite breakfast. After the pandemic hit and put a holt on everything, they decided to turn their inside joke into reality.
'Unfrosted' is Jerry's directorial debut and it did not disappoint! The movie has a stellar cast, who did some superb acting, but it was made better for the fact that they had some good material with which to work. The lighting, musical score, costumes, set design and set pieces were superb!
It's not the greatest movie ever made, but it is a good family movie with some laughs, good references and great cameos.
I am someone who likes to learn about history so, as the credits rolled, I looked up Postum Cereal Company to find out that it was founded by C. W. Post in 1895 and was inherited by his daughter, Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1914. Ms Post is a remarkable woman - very intelligent, business-minded and philanthropic! I implore you to look her up.
Would I recommend this movie? Yes, but don't expect it to be anything deep and thought-provoking; it's a family movie.
This Is Me... Now: A Love Story (2024)
Um... what?!
I have mixed feelings about this movie. I like Jennifer Lopez as both a singer and actress, so when I saw this pop up, I was intrigued. The impression that the trailer gave was kind of a satire; Jennifer laughing at her unlucky-in-love past, so to speak.
Let me get this out of the way first and foremost: the movie has promise and I loved that it didn't take itself too seriously!
With that out of the way, the movie was incohesive. The movie was visually appealing, but the overly-produced music video segments take away from the movie and make it seem too try hard, in my opinion. Either have a cohesive movie, or a compilation of music videos!
I had originally given this movie a 3/10 rating, but once I got passed the movie's faults, I able to enjoy it for what it was and found that there were funny bits (I liked the scenes with the zodiac signs and her friends). Therefore, I upped the rating to 5/10.
Missing (2023)
Wow!
Both Prime Video and IMDB gave a basic synopsis for this movie, but I chose to give it a go, and I'm glad that I did!
I have never seen "Searching," but, apparently, this is similar and there are a lot of Easter eggs referring back to that movie. For instance, both movies use technology to track down a missing person.
The movie is well-written, cast, acted, filmed, and the score was great. It was also fast-paced so the 1h 50m felt like nothing!
The movie is somewhat predictable if you're paying attention, but there are a lot of twists and turns, all of which build to the climax. It also raises a lot of questions, which are answered. There's a tidbit in the middle of the movie that gives the ending away, but it's so fast-paced that, unless you happen to freeze it on that frame, you will miss it.
Before the climax, the film revisits some earlier scenes, which give more context as to what has been happening and the reasons for it.
The climax is predictable, especially with the foreshadowing and clues riddled throughout the movie.
Is this movie worth a re-watch? Of course it is! Maybe rewatch it multiple times over!
Chasing Liberty (2004)
Not a bad movie
I love romantic comedies, movies about president's daughters and Mark Harmon, so I thought I'd give this one a go. It was predictable, at it's best! I've definitely seen this before, only starring Katie Holmes and Marc Blucas.
It was cast okay - I love Mark Harmon's work, but I found him better as Gibbs in NCIS than I did in this movie and I personally found Michael Keaton to make for a better president. Mandy Moore was okay and Matthew Goode gave a good performance as Agent Ben Calder. Though, the love story between Morales (Annabella Sciorra) and Weiss (Jeremy Piven) was entertaining!
The story... I will admit that what set this movie apart from the First Daughter was that this movie had international travel with amazing sights, whereas the First Daughter stayed in Washington, DC, America.
All in all, this movie was predictable, cheesy and unoriginal, but an okay movie.
Freaky Friday (2018)
Meh! Next!
There are really no spoilers in this review, but I've marked it as such, as I don't want this review to be flagged by IMDB, in case they think it does.
I was excited to see this movie because I loved the previous renditions... well, the previous one. Though, I didn't know how it'd work as a musical.
To be honest, I like the story and where they were trying to go with it, but it wasn't executed well. The musical aspect of it didn't work at all! For the story part, it is corny, overdone and unbelievable - I can understand that in a teenager's eyes, it's great to be a parent; you can do whatever you want and you get out of high school, leaving the drama behind. For a parent, though... Katherine seems to forget what high school is really like and is in for a rude awakening when she attends. Truth be told, they're both in for a rude awakening, which is the purpose of this movie.
I liked that the movie wasn't a full-on musical, but they could still have ditched it, as the movie would have done well without it. In all honesty, I couldn't wait for the musical numbers to be over with!
I would have liked the different emotions to be conveyed more through the songs and acting. The songs were too polished and void of emotion (angst, frustration, confusion and lust) and there wasn't enough 'raw' emotion with the acting.
In saying that, though, what can you expect for a family movie produced by Disney?
I liked that Alex was in it (I love Becker!) and Jason is a good actor.
Apart from those two, I don't recall knowing anyone else in the cast.
I gave it a scoring of 4/10 because it wasn't the worst movie in the world, but it was far from the best!
Arranged (2015)
A good concept
Documenting arranged marriages is a good concept and gives us a glimpse into other cultures and traditions, as well as their reasoning for such, which I am always interested in.
However...
I couldn't even finish the first episode!
Most of the participants were okay, with one being sensible with money, a Southern Belle coming across a spoiled brat, and another having unreasonable expectations upon his soon-to-be-wife, but one of the adults came across as somewhat of a predator, 'scouting' wives for his son at church, starting at 14, which didn't sit right with me.
In saying all that, though, I realise that reality shows aren't always reality and they aren't always what they appear to be. They can be heavily edited and things taken out of context to form an interesting storyline, so I will cut the show some slack.
The Poof Point (2001)
Meh. Tween movie for sure!
I like the concept of time travel, so this one slightly piqued my interest, but failed to keep it.
If I was a tween again, this would have probably kept my attention and I probably would have watched it more than once.
The writing and storyline are cheesy, but, honestly, what can you expect from a movie aimed at tweens? In saying that, the actors did a good job with the material they had to work with. The best part for me? The dog! I am an animal lover, though.
Would I recommend it? To a tween, yes.
Would I recommend it for parents? Parents may get a little bored with this one!
Would I watch it again? No.
Not the worst movie out there, but just not my cup of tea.
Jewish Matchmaking (2023)
Interesting... though, leads nowhere
I enjoyed Indian Matchmaking and it took me a while to watch Jewish Matchmaking, though I decided to take a chance on it in the end and binged watched it to the end... only to be left feeling disappointed!
The factors that I liked:
Leeza was a good host and had a very warm approach to her job and clients;
Most of the participants I liked and was cheering for;
The pace of each episode was good.
The things I didn't like, though, were:
As soon as they went on a couple of dates, whether with the same person or a different match, the participants' stories came to an abrupt halt and they were never to be seen or heard from again.
It would have been great if they had dedicated two episodes to concluding these stories - was the last date successful? Did they get married? Where are they now?
Jewish Matchmaking provided 8 episodes; they could've created 10, dedicating the last two to tying up loose ends. It just seemed that they had too many participants (though I liked most of them)
My advice to any other Matchmaking series: follow those stories cohesively to the end and provide a conclusion.
The Outfit (2022)
A masterpiece!
I loved the Outfit! I loved the writing and how it was all put together. This is not your ordinary mobster movie - it's not quickly paced, lots of action, the same thing you've seen over and over again... you won't see anything of Chicago but the shop. With a handful of characters Instead, you will get a refreshingly new story with lots of twists and turns, characters who have depth, and deception. Don't underestimate the unassuming tailor... ahem, excuse me, cutter!
The story was strong, the cinematography really good, the music spot on and it was well cast - not only is Mark the perfect Leonard, but his voice is so soothing and unassuming!
Would I recommend this film? Hell yes! Of course I would! A thousand times over!
Would I rewatch this film? Definitely - I think it deserves multiple views!
You People (2023)
Too heavy on the racism.
I was looking forward to this movie and I wanted so badly to enjoy it, but...
I love the cast; they're great! I get so many laughs from Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy man!
To be honest, this movie was cringeworthy. I understand where they wanted this to go and I can appreciate the interracial struggle - the couple trying to please and be patient with the other's parents. If you're going to incorporate racism into your movie, actually make your movie funny and bearable!
I found that Louise and David's characters were intentionally being racist; I think it more came out of ignorance, especially at the wedding, but Eddie's character was just being racist.
I like Jonah with longer hair and a beard, though.
Would I watch this movie again? Heck no!
Would I recommend it? No! I had a slight chuckle at some point, but no real laughs.
Nanny (2022)
Not horror, but it's okay for what it is.
When I saw that this movie was produced by Blumhouse, I was excited; they make some good horror films!
At first, I was confused, as this movie is advertised as a horror, but their attempts as horror are pretty weak! Yes, Aisha has hallucinations and is possibly haunted by a ghost, but other than that, there is nothing that would class this as a horror or even a thriller!
If you take it for what it is (a drama), the film is pretty good - it's well written, directed, they cast it well, the musical score suited the story, and the lighting is good.
Anna Diop is a good actress and I look forward to seeing more of her work.
Would I watch this again? If it were for the dramatic aspects, very possibly. If it was for the horror genre, no; there are actual horror films out here!
The Craigslist Killer (2011)
Doesn't live up to its promise
I would have thought that this would be really interesting and well-written for a movie that's based off a true story, but, alas... it's a cheesy midday flick that was made for TV. The writing and production value doesn't give the story any justice whatsoever and romanticizes Mark and his escalating obsession with hurting women!
I would have liked to have been given a backstory for the characters to really get to know them and build an emotional connection to them - instead, the characters seem a little one dimensional and you don't feel any sympathy for any of them.
If you're going to attempt to produce a film that is based on true events, at least do it justice and make it a compelling watch!
I like the actors and think that they tried their best with the material that they were given.
Unthinkable (2010)
A movie worth watching and pondering over
I watched 'Unthinkable' last night and it was incredibly intense, one of the most intense movies that I've ever watched with a very heavy subject at heart! It is something that will sit with me, as a viewer, touching on good vs evil, what one thinks is right and how far they will go to achieve the desired outcome. This goes for both sides: the terrorist and the authorities who are tasked with keeping us safe.
Once the action starts, it really never stops! Sure, there are periods of reprieve, but they are far and few in between.
The movie was cast well with Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Sheen, two of my favourite actors, and Carrie-Anne Moss. It was helped that it was well-written, as well as directed really well, supported by the superb score and lighting!
Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely! I recommend everyone watch this and it is shown in schools (college, maybe) as study material. I also loved it because it focused on the subject matter and there was no romance intertwined. Yes, it touches on family, but there's no meet-cute or developing romance.
Do Revenge (2022)
Worth a watch
I will start off with saying that I really enjoyed the movie!
I loved the cast, whom did a good job with the movie. I loved that Sarah Michelle Geller was in it; she's one of my favourite actresses!! I loved Buffy!
The writing was good as well, providing us with some sass and twist and turns. It was, however, somewhat predictable - the story has been done over and over again. It's got hints of being a modernised version of 'Cruel Intentions,' which also stars Sarah Michelle Geller.
Is this movie worth a watch? Absolutely!
Is it worthy of being watched over and over again? Do you really need to ask?
The Bubble (2022)
A silly, light-hearted film.
Let me start by saying that I've seen some really negative comments and some positive ones. I really enjoyed it! It's not the best of movies out there, but it's some lighthearted entertainment, which I like, especially when it involves a subject such as the pandemic. I don't want a heavy movie, even if it is action-packed; I want a somewhat goofy, lighthearted movie where you can just let go. You don't have to concentrate that hard.
I like spoofs and satires and this movie is like that - it is self-aware and they take the mickey out of it.
Not for everyone, sure.
One thing that I will note is that some of the cameos just didn't make sense - why are they there? What purpose do they serve?
Spree (2020)
Surprisingly good.
I saw this show up on Netflix and I wondered if it was any good, but I gave it a go and it kept my attention.
The movie is not a masterpiece and it knows it. The writer and director really took the piss out of this and the world of popular culture, but it worked really well. The movie flowed at an easy pace, was easy to keep up with, had good actors and had something to say about current pop culture - we're obsessed with social media and being popular.
As I said, I am glad that I clicked on this, as it kept my attention.
Would I recommend this movie? Yes.
Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World (2011)
A family movie with good core values
The basis is that both Tick Tock and the Time Keeper are at large and are speeding up time, intended on actually stopping time. It's up to Rebecca and Cecil to join their stepmother, who's a retired spy, in defeating the villains and save the day. It is at the OSS that Rebecca and Cecil meet OSS boss and former Spy Kid Carmen Cortez. In the meantime, Rebecca and Cecil's father, Wilbur works at Spy Hunters, a local television show about hunting and capturing spies. The only problem, though, is that he has yet to catch a single spy. That is until his spy compass points him towards multiple spies.
This film stars Rowan Blanchard (Girl Meet World) as Rebecca Wilson, Mason Cook as Cecil Wilson, Joel McHale (Community) is Rebecca and Cecil's spy hunter and happy-go-lucky father, Wilbur Wilson, and Dark Angel's Jessica Alba as their stepmother Marissa Wilson, who also happens to be a spy. Jeremy Piven (Entourage) plays three roles in this movie: Danger D'Amo, Tick Tock and Time Keeper. Ricky Gervais voices Agronaught, their talking dog, who also happens to be a spy.
The writing is pretty good and funny, as is the directing, and acting from the like likes of Alba, Blanchard, McHale, Cook and Piven. Altogether, they make the movie funny! Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara reprise their roles as Carmen and Juni Cortez, respectively, and Danny Trejo reprises his own role as Uncle Machete. Alexa's acting wasn't as good in the beginning as it has been in the past, but she can be forgiven as it had been eight years since Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, the third instalment was released. It also improved over the course of the movie, as did Daryl's.
You would think that the fourth Spy Kids movie would not be as good as the first three, but it's just as good. It is, perhaps, just as good as the first! Of course, there are some things that the parents will pick up on and cringe about, but not the children; these little details will go over the children's heads. The graphics and lighting, though, like with the first three movies, are great!
One of the great things, though, is that it still maintains that strong core value, which is that even as we grow up, family is everything and we are stronger as a team rather than fighting against each other. Together, we can waver any storm!
The premise is really good, like the first instalment, as are the writing, directing, casting, lighting, visual effects, audio, scoring and producing! The movie is enjoyable for the whole family, not just for the children, with funny moments and lots of action, as well as stretching the imagination, introducing families to a world beyond reality. In the world of Spy Kids anything is possible! Parents, who grew up with the Spy Kids franchise, all of which began nineteen years ago in 2001, will be able to share their favourite movies with their own children.
When Alexa first appeared, I thought her acting was a bit wooden, but it has been at least eight years since Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over was released, and her acting got better (or I could overlook it) the further we got into the movie.
There are two downsides to this movie, both of which will go over the children's heads:
1. Jessica Alba's fake pregnancy belly was... well, it wasn't fitted correctly and was clearly a fake.
2. It was produced by the Weinstein brothers, which includes Harvey Weinstein.
Other than this, the movie was pretty good, fun for the whole family, and that is why I would give it a 6.5, but seeing as the rating system doesn't include fractions, I will give it a seven out of ten.
Rough Night (2017)
Aussie? Nah, mate!
I was really looking forward to this movie, but first thing's first:
Why did the casting directors give an Australian role to an American instead of, say, an actual Australian accent who has a legit Australian accent? I love Kate McKinnon; she's incredibly funny! Apart from the humour aspect that she brought to this movie, she's not suited to such a role. Her Australian accent was, in all honesty, horrible! Granted, the Australian accent is hard to replicate and while Americans do their best attempt, they just don't quite... even come close to nailing it! There are many Australian actresses they could've cast in this role and been just as funny. The first example is Rebel Wilson. Second comes Margot Robbie. Tammin Sursok, Abbie Cornish, Teresa Palmer (I'm not sure if she's in the US, or just Australia), Samara Weaving, Isabel Lucas, Ruby Rose...
Now, onto other matters...
The acting was... okay, but the characters were really self-centred and the plot didn't really make sense. Why would they not call at least the ambulance, if not the cops? Of course, the cops would be called, but at least this would be viewed for what it is: an accident, and they did the right thing. But no, for the sake for comedy, they mustn't call the cops. It's just illogical!
Other than that, the movie's not too bad, but still rather cringeworthy and predictable with a few cheap laughs.
Would I watch this again? Probably not. Would I recommend this movie to anyone? No.
6 Underground (2019)
An action movie which delivers on the action, but lacks a cohesive plot and character development.
A good action movie which lacks a cohesive plot and character development.
The movie opens with Ryan Reynold's character jumping out of a plane, which is going down. Then, it cuts back to four months prior to a car chase with gunfire and killing. There's not a real story here - the main character of One (Reynold's) doesn't explain why he's in a car chase with other people.
For the entirety of the movie, you kind of get what they characters are doing and why, but there's no real character development; just a titbit of background and the rest open-fire.
The real adventure nuts might enjoy it, as it's a pure adrenaline rush of a movie, and while I enjoyed it, I need depth to the story as well as fleshed out characters, which you think that a movie such as this goes for two hours and eight minutes could afford.
Because of the lack of character development, I didn't feel much empathy for the characters.
Some of the soundtrack choices are a bit predictable and felt that they shouldn't be there, but, instead, replaced by something else.
It was kind of funny, but kind of not.
The way that this movie was edited, too, left something to be desired; it was all over the place in the narrative!
I like Ryan Reynolds and that is why I decided to watch this film, as well as after reading the synopsis. However, I wouldn't say that the action started after he faked his own death, though, as the synopsis would lead you to believe, but before.
Would I watch it again? Eh. It was good and action-packed, but I don't know if it's worth watching again, in all honesty.
Terminal (2018)
Better than I had expected!
First I will say that this movie was not at all what I was expecting!
I saw this at the shops and thought of buying it, but decided to first look up and was convinced not to, as it didn't have the best rating (though I didn't read the reviews), though there are many movies that have low ratings, but I quite enjoy. I then saw it on Google Play Movies and, because there was a Black Friday special, decided to give it a go.
I was disappointed that I hadn't trusted my gut at the shops, but glad that I had rented it, as it sure didn't disappoint! Also, it has Mike Myers. What better actor?!
It was cast well and the visual effects... well, they were good. The plot was really good, though simple, but it could have been improved. The casting, though, was superb! I did find the accent that Margot Robbie put on a bit... it wasn't satisfying and a bit ditzy in the trailer, but I didn't mind it as the movie went on. The story was a little all over the place, but tied itself up quite nicely in the end with some twists, though, some of it was predictable.
All in all, I wasn't expecting much from this movie, but got a pleasant surprise with the final result! Would I recommend this? Yes, I sure would!
Coherence (2013)
An incoherent movie
I found this title on Netflix's 'trending now' list and, upon finding that it had Nicholas Brendon (Buffy's Xander) in it, I was willing to give it a go. As I started to view it, I looked it up on IMDB, and was surprised to see it have such a high rating with a lot of great reviews; it, to me, didn't match what I was seeing. I didn't go in with such high hopes, but I did hope that it would be better than it was. I would call this worse than a B-grade movie! I have never seen James Ward Byrkit's other movies, but I sure do hope that they're much better than this one!
The premise had promise, but the acting, script, directing and camera work let it down significantly. The acting was wooden, the script was weak and didn't allow these actors to shine, the directing didn't do it any justice and the camera work was shocking - the camera operators just couldn't keep the camera still and focused on irrelevant objects, leaving the important or interesting elements out of focus. The camera was out of focus and then slowly focused on a glass that one character had put down to dry. What was the purpose of this? This style is usually done when revealing something new and surprising to the audience. What was the reveal? We had seen the character washing the glass before setting it down to dry.
The camera work can work if done well, especially if it's a POV shot, and it can add to the tension arising in the story, but it just didn't work here.
Some other things that didn't make sense:
If, after some of the guys left to check out the house up the road, why would the other characters be scared and grab a baseball bat with which to protect themselves when they hear a knock on the door? Wouldn't it be logical that it'd be their friends returning?
Why would one of the characters go to the other house, drug her alternate self and then knock her out with the toilet bowl cover? That doesn't make sense.
All in all, I give it 2/10 stars, as this movie was all over the place, not making sense and leaving the audience confused, therefore rendering it incoherent. Maybe that's why James Ward Byrkit named it 'Incoherent', as it's just that.
The Neon Demon (2016)
A visually appealing fashion catalogue on screen lacking substance.
This is a film by Nicolas Winding Refn, which is a visual feast, featuring top celebrities. It features Elle Fanning as Jesse, an aspiring model who meets make-up artist Ruby (Jena Malone from 'the Hunger Games' fame, among others) and two fellow models Gigi (Bella Heathcote, 'Neighbours,' 'Fifty Shades Darker') and Sarah (Abbey Lee, 'Mad Max: Fury Road,' 'Office Christmas Party'). As other models, such as Gigi and Sarah, work hard for where they are and are nearing their 'expiration dates,' Jesse experiences success rather quickly. She befriends Ruby, Gigi and Sarah, but soon learns that the trio soon becomes resentful of her good-looks and success.
I saw this movie pop up on Netflix and decided to give it a go because of the actors and it looked visually appealing. Unfortunately, this is just what it is, visually appealing. I was disappointed because I know the calibre that these actresses can go, but that performance I know them for just wasn't delivered in this film. Perhaps that had something to do with the writing and story, which left little to be desired. The story had potential, but because of the writing, it didn't get very far. Instead, there's no true substance to this movie at all. It's like looking at the latest edition of Vogue Magazine - the wardrobe, lighting and make-up are there, and look stunning, but not only is there no text to accompany those photos, there's also nothing about the models wearing those clothes. Sure, there's dialogue, but it's all superficial s***; the dialogue doesn't add any depth to the characters. Therefore, the audience doesn't feel any connection with the said characters and we don't really care what happens to them. This movie is just reiterating what we've long suspected (which has been proven untrue) that models are just airheads who lack any real depth and are more concerned with their looks than anything else.
The soundtrack is bizarre and shouldn't be in such a film. But, considering that the film, itself, is bizarre, I guess it suits.
I don't know if I'd see this movie again. Apart from the visual feast, this movie is lacking in anything real and, therefore, I give it 3.5/5 stars.
Child 44 (2015)
Wow!
This was a brilliant movie, but also sad and terrifying! The acting was amazing, as were the script and direction! I wish I could give this movie more stars, but, unfortunately, I can't.
This film is far from a movie to which you could sit back, kick your heels off and relax with a wine, turning your mind off; it's full of feeling and a real tearjerker, depicting what life must have been like in a communist society run by Stalin.
Before I Go to Sleep (2014)
Whoa!
Claire Lucas (Nicole Kidman) wakes up every morning to Ben (Colin Firth) sleeping in her bed. The only problem is that she doesn't remember who he is or that she's not the 20-year-old she once was. Every morning, Ben reminds Claire that he's her husband and that she's now 40. He also reminds her that she's been in an accident ten years ago, which explains why she cannot remember anything.
With the help of neurologist Dr Mike Nasch (Mark Strong), she her memory starts to resurface and she is faced with something that nobody should be forced to face, let alone be her reality.
You expect the story to be one thing, but as her memories start to resurface, with the help of neurologist Dr. Mike Nash, a web of lies unravels, and you find out that it's another thing entirely!
You question as to what's going on and who's to blame. This, however, is predictable, and even though you can see what's coming (or, at least you suspect what's coming), the twist still seems to slap you in the face!
The plot is nothing original, as it has somewhat been done in '50 First Dates', just in a slightly different way, as it was a comedy, not a psychological thriller as this movie is. However, the acting, directing, musical score and lighting are superb! The makeup could have been done better. I'm not saying that it wasn't good, but some of the makeup effects disappear for a bit in some of the film where it should have stayed.
According to IMDB's trivial facts, Nicole studied people with amnesia, including watching a documentary on Clive Wearing called, 'Clive Wearing, living without memory', which is about a man who got viral encephalitis and, as a result, cannot remember anything after ten minutes. He wakes up every morning and greets his wife as if he hasn't seen her in years. He also keeps a diary of what has happened each day, recording the times these events happen.
Again, both Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman play their roles particularly well and the directing is superb!
This is definitely a movie which I would see again! I would also recommend other people to see it.
Bronson (2008)
A crazy action flick with barely any explanation!
An interesting movie, but I don't think that Michael Peterson/Charles Bronson deserves the fame; after all, he beat up guard after guard without remorse and he's wanted to be famous, which is exactly what this film has made him. He's milking his fame for all its worth, releasing fitness books, offering his fans the opportunity to meet him in person within the prison walls...
However, back to the movie itself.
While it was interesting to watch, it really didn't make much sense, as it didn't really explain things. It's like the writer just wanted to jump in and then realised that he needed to give some backstory, so he did without really committing to it; it was just a waste of time from the writer's viewpoint! There were a lot of jump cuts and important dialogue was missing - his girlfriend visits him in jail, but they exchange no dialogue? What's the point in having that scene in there? It's like it was just filler! When did Michael Peterson/Charles Bronson become interested in art? There were vital parts of the story left out. Also, why did he like to incite violence upon the guards? Was it purely because he was insane?
I think the writers just wanted to create an action movie and didn't pay much attention to the story or how to make it flow. I understand that you can't fit everything in or explain everything in the timeframe that it had, but it's as if they couldn't be bothered, or didn't know how. If that's the case, how do they expect the audience to be bothered watching it?
Tom Hardy did a good job with what he had to work with, and it is a shame that the writers and director let him down. The comedy scenes weren't too bad and were probably the most entertaining parts of the entire story!
Some reviewers are complaining of there being too much violence, language and nudity (to the extreme). I agree with the first two points, as there was a lot of violence and language (blame that on the writers, and, probably Bronson himself). The nudity, however, wasn't excessive; there was only full-frontal nudity in seven scenes out of many! I don't believe it should be MA 15+, though; it should be rated R18+, considering the amount of violence, language and nudity.
Was this a good movie? Eh, it was okay! Would I see it again? No, I would not!
