Endgame (2011)
Mediocre effort using rehashed ideas
This would be an interesting concept but still very mediocre show if not a rehash of already done ideas.
The fun and ridiculous garbage that is The Mentalist, Castle, Lie To Me and other similar shows that are done SOOOO much better and if you are going to spend time with this genre, spend your time with better quality.
I am a 4th generation Russian decent and REALLY wanted to like the show that highlighted a Russian character. The actor and character are NOT BAD and the actor is probably the highlight.
Everything else just ends up mediocre, or less than mediocre.
Bedlam (2011)
Stylish, light. sexy and creepy!
I REALLY liked this show simply based on the cool subject matter. The setting is GREAT and can lead to many creepy stories to be told. In reality it would be SOOO COOL to have a flat in a place like that, as long as the spirits have not targeted you any particular week.
I read reviews about bad acting and maybe it is because I am not a Brit I cannot pick up on it as much, acting is in the little details and I am not sure what they are supposed to sound like so I must miss it. I think the acting is just fine. The actors are also attractive and that is not always commonplace on Brit TV. Maybe the acting bar can be lowered because they are pretty people.
I see A LOT of potential for future seasons and even though I read the article about the low ratings I see will have season 2 and I am excited.
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
More of the same but still worth watching
Many movies require a suspension of disbelief. Law Abiding Citizen is no different but is not any more a stretch than other similar movies.
The lead actors are not great but not bad. Both actors offer subdued and restricted performances that are not overdone and do the trick to carry the film along without overpowering or detracting from the story. The main character played by Butler is one of the more interestingly written characters I have seen in a while and a plus for the film.
The films direction and style are also not overdone but still a better than average quality that also carries the movie along and does not attempt to be too artsy or showy.
Going in to the movie, I was pretty sure that this movie was going to be the same force fed drivel that Hollywood craps out all too often. I was pleasantly surprised that despite feeling like I have taken this similar trip before, I enjoyed the entire ride in Law Abiding Citizen. A moment or two did lose me or had me shaking my head but overall the film seemed to work for me.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007)
An overlooked, soon to be classic
I can understand how this film is a failure. It looks like a typical cookie cutter comedy in the same style of Talladega Nights, Anchorman and the new Will Ferrell basketball movie, but without the star power of Will Ferrell.
I had absolutely no desire to see this movie and was forced to sit through it.
I was pleasantly surprised at how good this movie is. There are gags, spoofs and a constant sarcastic dialog that has so much humor, you will miss it if you do not pay attention. Or you just might not get it. I feel for those people because they are missing out on a lot of laughter in life overall.
I would compare this movie more closely to Anchorman. The difference is that Will Ferrell is a walking joke with incredible star power and John C. Rilely is a bland hard to look at individual.
Surprisingly, John C. pulls this role off. He is great as the sidekick but there are very few roles that he can carry as a lead. For him, this is it and he does a good job.
The one thing that sets this film apart from many other similar comedies is the music and this is where John C. shines. Every song is almost a ripoff of similar song from a genre, but still great songs. The last time I have seen a comedy with great music that was 'original' and this good was the South Park movie, an often overlooked element to a very offensive movie. This element for Dewey Cox sets it apart from the Superbad's of the industry.
If you do not go see this soon, it will be on DVD shortly. This will be its time to shine and and people will be saying "Wrong Kid Died" and "I'm Deweys 12 year old girlfriend" around the water cooler at work.
