Cory and the Wongnotes (2021)
What is your favourite variety show and why is it Cory and the Wongnotes?
This show just screams good vibes. Everyone involved is having so much fun and the tune "Coming back around" is a banger.
I love Cory and believe he is the best "new" guitarist to have graced music in a decade where guitar was dying out from the mainstream. The man loves music and this show is all about it.
I hope it gets the recognition it deserves and that more musical artists will come onto the show!
Something that might be cool, since it's on YouTube: Invite some music YouTubers! Adam Neely, Rob Scallon, Davie504, Sarah Longfield etc. are all great musicians and known names for the YT community! I bet they would love to talk with Cory for a bit about why zebras are great for collaboration!
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Authentic stuff
This is the stuff you pay for. It is immensly well-written.
I love the unique style of it. I love how there are two main characters whose thoughts you can hear throughout the episodes.
There is actual believable character development. The characters change throughout the first season.
The ending as of now (series 1) is perfect. I have good faith in the second series, but I am just a teeny bit scared that it won't be up to the standard this first series has set.
After Life (2019)
Season 1 is phenomenal, I hope season 2 will be just as good.
The story of Tony, who goes through the grieving process of losing his wife to breast cancer, is a touching one.
The story is well-written, and all the characters play a bigger role later on than you might speculate at the start. The humour is on point as well. It does not feel forced and it does not take anything away from the serious struggles Tony has.
The episodes almost feel formualic, which further shows how beaten Tony really is; he does not do anything. He repeats the same steps he did the day before. He feeds and walks his dog, he visits his dad, he goes to work etc. I like to think that this is intentionally done to prove that point even more.
I can not wait for season 2!
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (2004)
A very subjective perfect score
This anime has many, many flaws.
But as a musician no anime, tv series or even film has ever portrayed playing in a band as this anime did. I love how real it feels and the struggles the characters face. Obviously there's some spicy stuff added which would never happen in real life, but at its core it stays true to the hard times one has trying to break through as a band.
You can see the genuine love for music the people behind this anime in the anime. From the knock-off band shirts, to amazing guitars being shown. The moments that pay respect to the underappreciated members of most bands (the rhythm section) are something that I love dearly as a bassist myself.
Again objectively it could be 6 or 7 at best. But because it feels like the story is tailored for me personally and I see the love and effort put into it by its creators I have to give my favourite anime a perfect score.
Futurama: Game of Tones (2013)
Jurassic Bark doesn't hold a candle to this
Jurassic Bark (and the luck of the Fryish) are two of the most talked about episodes when futurama is the topic of conversation. They both have great humour and end on a big emotional note. They are both bittersweet and rightfully get the attention they deserve.
But then in the last season, seemingly out of nowhere, this episode shows up. The ending brought tears to my eyes. I am not ashamed to admit that I actually cried watching this. I've seen this episode numerous times and it still hits as hard as ever. The final shot of Fry's mum waking up and just smile is such a bittersweet moment.
