The Idea of You (2024)
Nicholas Galitzine is the star here
Nicholas Galitzine is the star here - he manages to convey the charisma, likeability and vulnerability of his character (very expressive face) and his dance moves aren't bad either.
The film is well paced and directed, the music scenes are entertaining (and I don't ever care about boy bands).
Storyline manages to convey double standards for age-gap relationships without being too preachy.
The weak point is Anne Hathaway's character who is played in a manic pixie dream "woman" manner and she seems more immature than him.
The Essex Hotel scene is anything but "hot" and doesn't communicate any connection required to take the relationship to the next level a.k.a. Europe. The obligatory "woman wears men's clothing after sex" is there but at least it's not a shirt and there's too much of her parading around in satin and lace throughout the film.
Hotel scenes with velvet voices, generic seduction moves and dancing around in underwear need not to be seen on any screens ever again.
Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time (2021)
Two narcissists "farting around"
This was painful to watch.
A filmaker who prefaces by saying it should not be about him but than makes it about him.
And tropes about a creative man who treats his family, wife in particular, like crap while being charming to everyone else.
The Essex Serpent (2022)
So much wrong with it
Starting with Clare Danes, she was astonishingly bad in this. She looked constipated most of the time and was so unlikeable that it didn't seem plausible that EVERYONE was in love with her.
I just kept thinking, this could have been Keria Knightley (original casting).
Although I am not sure she could have saved it. So many randon storylines and a very rushed ending.
Anatomy of a Scandal (2022)
I just watched it for Michelle Dockery
I just watched it for Michelle Dockery.
She is brilliant in it, as she is in everything, and the only believable (main) character.
Otherwise it's an average show.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Season 2 is ridiculous
Where to even begin.. The most horrific part of season 2 is Theresa Palmer's acting. She just can't act, the only thing she can do is the teary eyes look an it's in almost every scene because that's probably the only thing that made the cut. Matthew Goode is also terrible in it and he is decent actor otherwise. He just growls at everyone. Between the two of them they have zero chemistry. Diana's character has almost no agency, she is just trying to manage the bad boy Matthew. Their relationship makes no sense, there is no continuity from one scene to the next. The main topic of the season 2 is not finding The Book of Life or getting Diana the witch training she needs (which btw consists of her standing in the middle of the room and tying knots), it is coaching Matthew on his (blood)rage issues. It is boring let alone very outdated. Oh and! To mess up with time as Diana's father finally! Points out.
A Discovery of Witches: Episode #2.1 (2021)
Nothing happens
.. except for Matthew being a bad boy and Diana trying to manage him instead of focusing on herself.
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Just like Prometheus so much waisted potential
Generic characters, terrible writing, very good set design and camera.
Just like Prometheus. It's a shame really, RS has great ideas but fails in pretty much everything else.
History's Greatest Mysteries (2020)
Can't believe it made it to TV
First episode has no substance whatsoever. The main investigator is an utter pseudo expert, has no relevant insights to share with the audience or people he interviews or works with. They come up with no interesting discoveries, total waste of time.
Rebecca (2020)
Really not very good
The only good thing about it is that the main male lead is not an old creepy guy anymore. Unfortunately he is still a first class bully.
Oh, and Lily James' wardrobe is great.
Last Night (2010)
When are we getting a sequel to this?
This is such a magnificient and underrated film.
We need to see these characters 10 years later.
Run (2020)
Very bad
The fact that with that much talent involved it turned out so bad is making it even worse. The two main characters are utterly unlikeable.
The Trip to Greece (2020)
Still great!
The fact that they keep doing the same thing and it never looses its charm is a small kind of a miracle. More please!
Breeders (2020)
Gradual
I very much like the show but I am getting increasingly annoyed with the character of Ally. While Paul is a complex character, realistic and human, Ally seems to be portrayed like a super woman, relaxed mother and cool wife, succesfull, desirable, etc. - I am struggling to find a fault with her. The show would be much more relevant and credible if she was portrayed as a multi-dimensional human being as well, warts and all.
Military Wives (2019)
Feel bad film
I thought this a horrific film, yes, due to politics. These troops are foreign invaders in someone else's country and I couldn't care less about any of the characters. Kept watching hoping for some redeming features but just ended up feeling terrible for watching it at all.
The Burnt Orange Heresy (2019)
Terrible
Gave it any stars at all only because of Claes Bang's performance, everything else is incredibly bad. Elizabeth Debicki's role is so poorly written it feels like the old days (i.e. very recent cinematic past with very badly written female roles). She is merely a screen prop.
Emma. (2020)
Utterly miscast and charmless
This film is so utterly miscast. There is no chemistry bewtween Emma and Knightley, Emma is charmless, Knightley is generic, Frank churchill unappealing (just remember Ewan McGregor!) and the thing that Billy Nighy always does is somehow bland. A ruined classic.
The Outsider: Foxhead (2020)
TV poetry
This was a great episode. I could watch Ben Mendelsohn puff and sigh all day long. The only thing that was perhaps too emphasised and therefore forced was the camaraderie between the group of main characters.
Peaky Blinders: Mr. Jones (2019)
Fan service fest
This whole season seems to have been written by reddit.
The Outsider: Que Viene el Coco (2020)
Best episode so far
The plot thickens! This show just keeps getting better.
The Outsider (2020)
All about Ben Mendelsohn
This show is all about Ben Mendelsohn, so brilliant in it!
Carnival Row (2019)
Imogen and Agreus steal the show
Could have been much better if they got someone who can act instead of Cara Delevingne. Orlando is quite good but Cara is either overacting or "striking a pose". The Imogen/Agreus storyline is much more gripping, therefore.
