3 Body Problem (2024)
Colosal miscasts ruin otherwise good Sci-Fi
With a great book(s) behind this and already existing Chinese version, you would expect higher quality of the series.
But no, few miscasts make many scenes painful to watch and completely break the immersion into the story.
Eiza González playing Auggie Salazar, one of the main characters, is a terrible actress; her wooden performance can be used in D production easily, but not here. Emotional range of a plank with two possible expressions - worried and afraid, and nothing in between is difficult to place into any serious conversation. Every scene with her is painful to watch and fast forwarding turned out to be a solution for this.
Another actor, Jovan Adepo, playing Saul Durand, is permanently out of place, and role of his character is not clear, although he is billed as a top actor of the series. Supposedly smartest scientist alive at 31, Saul is not more than a useles friendly buddy with a vocabulary of a middle schooler and permanent filler between the scenes. Could do without the character altogether.
Series in general have great potential and story is building up permanently, it's a good sci-fi.
Sorry for the rant, but casting director should have been fired.
Taylor Tomlinson: Have It All (2024)
That's it?!
Taylor is very talented, quick witted comedian (commedienne?) and she have proven this already in her last two Netflix specials where she briliantly crafted her stories with impecable delivery.
This one, not so much. Recycled, reused jokes, repackaged to assemble the special at any cost, shows forced performance from the very begining. It was a compilation of her previous jokes with few new/old ones and that's about it.
It looks like new comedians cannot last more than two specials, (Iliza Shlesinger, taking about you).
So what now? Taylor will be used and abused for that abomination of After Midnight, until she crashes and hopefuly comes back to stand up with new and fresh material. Or, maybe not. We'll see.
Huge talent and natural comedy genius is going to waste in real time. At least it was good while it lasted.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Low budget Asian Matrix?
And low budget meaning - they saved on every possible aspect of a movie - plot, story line, dialogues, acting, consistency, logic, while being generous with fight scenes, ridicoulous costumes and scenery, 'vilians' for sake of having vilians so somebody can fight, you name it.
And it narows down to family relationships and dynamics that could be placed in completely different context and without unnecessary accelerated shots, multivereses (and interesected with slow motion fight scenes).
All in all, it looks like super long SNL skit, and not a funny one.
Drôle (2022)
Well written and with great dynamics
And the jokes in the stand-up routines are actually very good. And on top of it, the series touches on some social issues. Well done and hope for more.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Kill this before it escapes and goes into a next season
This was some serious lazy writing, naïve plot, predictable 'twists' and overall uninteresting and bland series.
Some say it is a satire, but it is not, this was a serious attempt to create a murder/mystery/psychological thriller and there was nothing of sorts (except for murders).
Don't give it more than 3 stars as with that lousy cliff hanger at the end, producers are obviously hoping for another season.
As much as Kristen Bell is cute and entertaining, this is not her genre.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Stop whining and actually watch the movie
This is brand new movie which have the same concept but also a different take on the original premise. The concept of Matrix is now matured and more grown up. For people who think Matrix is a bullet time scene alone, this is hard to comprehend. There was just enough fight and acrobatic scenes to keep the pace, but this was not the focus of the movie, hence the disappointment. Brains of average viewers are too contaminated with Marvel and DC spectacles that dialogues longer than 10 seconds are difficult to watch, but that's another topic altogether.
Gave movie a 9, because there are few parts that were rushed, otherwise, movie delivers fully on what true movie lovers would expect.
Now, watch it again and try and relax and enjoy it.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
I give it an F for effort
I was expecting more from Steve Martin (didn't expect much from Martin Short or Selena Gomez, tbh).
But, it was all the same - Steve Martin/Martin Short bashing each other, with Selena Gomez trying to balance the act with her over the top dramatic face expressions and lack of comedy timing (when needed).
This was expensive production, so they could have invested in better writing, at least. But no, the story flow is hectic, with change of rhythm and pace all the time; dialogues are lacing point and timing al the time. It looks like somebody really neglected post production.
And paid ratings with 10/10 score and with same format of a title and text are over the top and tasteless. IMDB should remove those, especially if they come from spam accounts.
Three star out of pure generosity, sorry Steve.
Utopia (2013)
Almost perfect
Camera, photography, colors, light, atmosphere, soundtrack, acting, story, dialogues, plot twists, everything was perfect, except for the character of Jessica Hyde (Fiona O'Shaughnessy), which degraded into duck face, Merilyn Monroe whisper talk person through the series and it was impossible to watch towards the end.
This was bad casting and acting combination. Not sure what was the actress going with, but instead of showing deranged and desperate assassin she turned it into a caricature. Too bad, as Utopia could be just perfect.
Hit and Run (2021)
If wood could act...
...that would be the main character, Segev (Lior Raz).
While the rest of the cast is showing more or less some acting capabilities, this actor just cannot pull anything, dialogue, timing, emotions, you name it. Every scene with him is cringe inducing since his acting is terrible.
The story is OK, and I'll leave it at that. Even with spoilers you won't lose much, anyway.
Tribes of Europa (2021)
Better sound editing?
Dialogues are almost completely overrun by too loud background music and sounf effects. Otherwise, it is OK-ish for a teenage adventure series.
