Bullet Head (2017)
I rarely cry in movies but I shed tears
If you're expecting endless action, you may be disappointed. What this film provides is some amazing acting to portray really full and intriguing characters. It has the ability to monologue without growing dull or tedious. Definitely stirs a lot of emotions, which I find rare these days. Very nuch enjoyed it- give it a go despite some negativity about it.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
I was surprised to see this as poorly reviewed it is
The film was exactly what a thriller should be- thrilling. It is the first thriller I have seen in a while to truly take my breath away. I was on edge and fearful throughout the movie, and suspense was fully built. The characters were all full and fascinating. Well casted, with brilliant acting, and a certain intriguing aethetic to the set, cinematography, camera work, and music.
Circle (2015)
Interesting, especially for such a small film
Really interesting seeing how the characters make their decisions, and you're on edge a lot. It is really gripping for a film set in a single room with characters we know so little about.
The problems are that the characters can be a bit caricaturesque (rich guy and atheist come to mind). Way too one note for the situation they're in. The social justice messages come across a bit forced and cringey (this coming from a lesbian feminist raised poor).
Still, a decent watch, and I would recommend.
Would You Rather (2012)
Well it's not terrible
I love the music!
As for the rest of it... the protagonist was the least interesting character in the film, and the bias towards her was irritating. I'd rather any other character win the game. She suffered the least by far because of everyone else's actions. For a rich villain, the traps could've been more interesting. The scenes were overly long without any suspense.
Still, it was a bit of fun. The eye scene was good, most unsettling task.
I respect Iris' choice at the end, and it made me like her a lot more than I did, but couldn't her and Lucas have got a lot of money selling their story instead? Was suing him possible? Like she didn't have to kill him.
Cube (1997)
Loved it
Lots of people complaining here about a character seeming to go nuts out of nowhere- my question: did you watch the film? He wasn't fully trustworthy from the start, and there was a clear power dynamic that was weird with him and Leaven that I was interested in and noticed from the start of the film.
Super fun, and the ending actually made me sad which is unusual for me. I'd probably enjoy it more if I actually understood the maths.
Completeley gripping, very stressful to watch.
Await Further Instructions (2018)
Not great, but not terrible- interesting concept
Execution could have been better, but conceptually I was interested. I expected a typical unexplained-motive torturer that wants to be Jigsaw, so it was nice that the film went down a different route, though again, it could have been executed better.
The acting was nowhere near as bad as people are claiming,. I think they're not used to British accents or something, because the acting was largely fine, though the script could have been better. And I, at the least, found the characters interesting for the most part, though I'm a slasher fan so I don't mind stereotypes, and they can be a bit caricaturesque.
All in all, I'd watch it once, but never again, and not go in expecting the best film in existence
The Basement (2018)
Amazing... Until the ending
I really enjoyed this film for the most part. Bill's actor was amazing, it was super engaging. I think why I enjoyed it more than others is that I watched this film in a casual setting with friends, so we could theorize the ending as we went. We had lots of different ideas. That's probably why my main issue with the film exists, though. The ending was horrible. It wasn't that it came out of nowhere, it was something I predicted, but the revelation about Kelly being Mary Beth/hiring Bill felt like rushed exposition. It felt weird with the rest of the film. It left more questions than it answered- if the victims weren't random, how were they chosen? If Mary Beth is so interested in how killing feels, why was she so removed from the events? Etc.
My other issues are that terrible English accent (me and my friends are English and could hear how odd it sounded) and the boring scenes of Kelly and Bianca. The film would've been better without the Kelly and Bianca plot with it ending at Craig dying, without us ever truly getting to know Bill, since we don't really anyway.
Gingerclown (2013)
I Kept Thinking "It Can't Get Worse"... And it did
Gingerclown didn't even look like a clown. The effects were poor. The acting was poor. The ending was bizarre. The beginning of the film was the best bit because it was funny in how bad it was. The rest wasn't even laughably bad, it was just god awful.
