Inspector Morse: The Death of the Self (1992)
Our Personal Favorite
My wife and I have watched the entire series countless times and this episode is our personal favorite. It's true. It's filmed in Italy. But that makes this episode even better as a result. Contrary to what a few reviewers have said, it has an interesting and fully developed plot that really isn't anymore difficult to grasp or any less complex or anymore contrived than any other episode.
Morse loses his perspective when it comes to the story's antagonist. He's sure that the person is guilty of something and then, without evidence and solely based on a hunch, he goes looking for the proof. In Driven to Distraction, for example, he was wrong. This time he was right. It's a typical Morse approach.
It's true that it feels like you don't quite know where things are going but such is the case in practically every Morse episode. And yes, the case doesn't come together until very late - something that happens practically every time!
Is it an implausible outcome? No. Is the story weak? No. It's quite good actually and just as hard to follow the first time you watch it as it is in practically every other episode. But in this episode you get great music and a good chemestry between Thaw and Whately, only it's set in Italy! That makes it a particularly great episode from an exceptional show.
Love It or List It Vancouver (2013)
It's a TV show people!
Is it fake? The home owners are real and so are their houses. Having said that, the rest is scripted for gawd sake. I've done renos. They really are a pandora's box - full of nasty surprises! And, these guys have to do it by code and often the labour aint cheap. That makes it much more expensive than you casual DYI'ers think that it should be. What makes it scripted is the fact that they often know in advance where some of these surprises might be and they make it seem like they found it in the middle of the reno for the dramatic effect. That's show biz.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
Pleasantly Surprised
I was not expecting much and thought I'd probably last about 15 minutes before bailing for something else. But it captured my interest enough and flowed well enough that I had no problem watching right to the end. Entertaining, in fact! I think it would help if you grew up watching I Love Lucy but it's not a requirement. Acting was very good.
Ghostbusters (2016)
Slow moving borefest!
Setting aside comparisons to the original, the only thing even remotely interesting about this film is the CGI. The stars aren't particularly good actors or funny. The first two-thirds of the film is overly long and aimless. How this script was approved in its final format is a mystery.
