Last Christmas (2019)
Finally a romantic comedy for me
I'm a big burly straight guy but this melted my cold heart and I love Ms Clarke and all the George Micheal tunes. Emma Thompson and her husband Greg Wise really surprised me with this one. Bravo on the perfect script!
Appaloosa (2008)
Terrible writing and not a "western" by any standards
Ed Harris wrote this? Well it seems like he started writing it sober and then got very very drunk (or vice versa) and tacked on the last hour of the movie.
The Allison character enters late, and when she does things begin to unravel. I had high hopes for this movie but not overreaching expectations. The plot just started out so good, but then it became some kind of romance/intrigue play that just so happens to be set in the wild west. It could have been space or Ancient Rome, it does not matter one bit.
Avoid this movie at all costs.

Don't be a frayer, see this film!
i am enjoying all the Israeli films on netflix. i too am catholic and used to live there (but white). Its a tad different because its filmed 4-5 years before I arrived, but still good.
Every time you see Israel via a film lens it appears different. This is evidence of the constant haze of politics and confusion that engulfs anyone there. You really have to look close to "see" things going on as they truly are.
I really enjoyed the actors and the authentic shots and linguistics. Its a great movie for anyone to learn from.
Most importantly, the film exposes much of the hard life that immigrants face in Israel. I recently looked on the website at obtaining a visa. I cannot tell you how many rules there are to prevent these abuses from happening. The fact the rules are there and so specific is evidence that immigrants were abused in the past.
I mostly had assumed this was immigrants from Asia (as they are commonly seen in Tel Aviv) but this movie opened my eyes to the widespread abuse of these people via extortion. It reminded me very much of people smugglers and the Mexican 'coyotes' preying on people's desires and dreams to live elsewhere.
A very good movie. Not depressing at all (as I was told). Its heartwarming and educational.

A film without a lense
Not quite sure how to describe this movie other than it captures the daily frustrations of Israeli life and the mystery that can befuddle anyone in their daily life, young or old.
All movies normally have a bit of glass between the viewer and the actors/actresses. This movie seems to dissolve that. A very strange phenomenon. But you feel more connected to the people on the screen. Like they are right before you. The only exception would be those moments that seem like dream sequences, but are all too real... or rather surreal.
I started out watching this movie to pick up a little bit of hebrew and soak up some of the sights of Tel Aviv. I am happy that I did. The scenes are very accurate. I especially liked one scene involving a taxi driver, a cat and some other key details that will amuse anyone who has spent time in Israel.
I got much more from this and plan to bring this movie to my parents house for mother's day. I hope they will enjoy it as much as I did.
An American Haunting (2005)
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome For the Mind
After reading the glowing recommendations here and seeing such a haunting and fancifull 'Sleepy Hollow' type trailer, I decided, very late on a work night, to see this abomination.
I thought it was going to be scary and blending time periods in a seamless fashion.. instead I got the same images, segments and same special effects looped endlessly in a boring fashion. The whole thing could have been a wonderful 20 minute short film. That would have been acceptable. And its not for lack of special effects I hate this movie so, its for lack of entertainment, pure and simple.
Where are the scares? Where is the suspense? Its all been bled out of it like a pig in an industrial slaugther house. I don't need blood, but I also don't need smoke and mirrors
Seriously, I mean, I had hoped for something a lil close to Skeleton Key, but instead I got the Lost Skeleton of Cadabra. Do not waste your time
