My Fair Lady (1964)

Brilliant and bah humbug to those that would say different.

Now 53 I watched this for the first time in 40 years. I had seen it several times as a child but not since. What a masterpiece it is. My daughter wanted to watch it and I reluctantly complied. Damn it, I was surprised when I enjoyed it more than any other film in recent memory.

I note the recent resurgence of musicals. Probably induced by the pandemic, Trump and the general state of things. Well the makers of these new productions could learn much from the masters of the craft that made this film and its ilk. This was the end of a golden period in entertainment. A time when Hollywood acknowledged its function was to entertain and uplift the populace. A time prior to great sections of society taking political cues from celebrity entertainers.

To those pointing out the misogyny of many of the characters, let's not waste anymore of your time on this site and whip you straight down to Scotland Yard where your powers of detection will be undoubtedly embraced and put to good use. This film is set in pre WW1 England you pontificating Pratt's. Of course much of the dynamics between characters are abhorrent by modern standards. The unfairness of Eliza's lot is the whole point. Be it at the hands of Henry her father or her general station. She rises above it showing her worth is no less than that of the royalty she enchants. The fact that her happy ending is still one lacking in true acknowledgment of her as a whole and competent person is commentary on that time and also a nod to our own Eliza story as a society. That we have come so far as a society but yet have so far to go. Nonetheless like Eliza we should still rejoice in that which we have achieved. To miss this is to miss the whole point of the film. Do you really think these social matters were misunderstood by the creators and cast of this film? If you do, then you suffer from a grandiose assessment of your own capacity to appraise life and are probably either an arts student or an idiot.

What a Barry Crocker.

I'm confused as to why this has received relatively decent reviews. It is clumsy and ridiculous at best. The child actor is irritating in the extreme and Kevin Bacon can do little with what he has been given. The movie is so silly that his efforts to bring gravitas to the story results in him appearing to overact. Predictable, Il conceived and a disappointment.

Fiercely relevant and absorbing, a must see.

I was engaged from the first scene and found this not only absorbing but enlightening. The fact that this already horribly brutalised child used her familiarity of trauma to ultimately disarm her abductor is both sad and inspiring. I'd say to those that comment on the acting in a negative manner to spare anyone your future reviews. The acting is superb on behalf of the lead and sufficient elsewhere. The writing and direction is inline with a docudrama. The story is so poignant and so eye opening that it can be forgiven a great deal of what some may require in regard to "slickness". Actually I think those that were not thoroughly engaged by this and by the end had there thoughts drift to critical reviews of acting are a bunch of soulless beanbags. Do not abide their shallow interpretation of what is ultimately an important piece of work. Do yourself a favour and watch this film.

Totally bias simplistic Nonsense
13 July 2019
As a Catholic and Christian I abhor this childish nonsense. Why are these types of nutters obsessed with the end of the world. If they desire to see God why do they not look to the beauty and humanity in the world. This is infantile mumbo jumbo at its most blatant. We have Rabbi obsessed with making an enormous MacMansion in the desert for God to live in filled with trinkets they have been gathering for 25 years, of course that's what an all knowing Omni presence would be wanting. The some kind of DJ as a narrator who declares himself a skeptic prior to gobbling up the whole premise without the remotest suggestion of questioning the arguments posed by the producers. Then to top it all off they all but accuse Barak Obama of being the antichrist. At know point is there even a suggestion of an opposing view to this apocalyptic diatribe. You would get as much balance from a man in Time Square wearing a sandwich board reading "The End is Nigh!" I would like to think the producers are well meaning but I cannot help think there is something malicious to their unbridled enthusiasm for Armageddon. Works like this undermine the life and message of Jesus. If you doubt the lunar landing and think the planes that hit world trade centres were actually missiles unleashed by George Bush then you are in for a real treat with this little gem of a "documentary". Otherwise, remember time is precious and should not be wasted on such dribble. Guess Trump wasn't on the radar at the time of filming. He poses a much more viable option as Satan incarnate.
