The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Put the Blinders on.
Because if you start comparing this to the other two entries in the "Mick Flanagan Haunting trilogy " you would end up dealing with way too much interference to enjoy this wonderfully spun tale which (yes, I largely concede) is not truly a horror story. Its more a narrative of yearning and bittersweet fulfilment set against a backdrop of supernatural themes. The first half is somewhat ambiguous as you are looking for the shrills and thrills suggested by the somewhat misleading title only to realise its more about the troubled characters than the manor itself. The second half really picks up and whilst the ghostly elements are unravelled, you realise they only provide a setting for the protagonists' coming to terms with their true inner selves. A real gem with only a few imperfections.
Pink (2016)
Superlative Courtroom Drama
Not very often do we come across a film which tackles uncomfortable truths about our daily existence with such poise and realism than this little masterpiece. It seemingly starts off as a story of three regular girls being harassed by a spoilt rich brat and his menacing friends in retaliation to a fun night gone awry. However, as the drama unfolds and the courtroom antics commence, it soon becomes evident that what is under scrutiny is not whether the girls are guilty or being victimized but a grave social issue which is rarely brought to the limelight especially in eastern cultures. Amitabh shines and delivers a sterling performance worthy of a filmfare nod. The three female protagonists do well to avoid any unnecessary theatrics whereas the young male antagonists essay their devious deeds and intentions fairly well. Definitely worth watching either on the big screen or in the familiar surroundings of your living room.
Tears in the Rain (1988)
interesting old fashioned romance
Quite an interesting movie with Sharon Stone in her pre-Basic Instinct days. Its a bit of an old fashioned romance where boy meets girl, but there is something mysterious about the girl's past which may end up ruining the relationship.
Good acting by the mainly British cast. 6/10
Outbreak (1995)
Keeps you engaged throughout
A truly magnificent movie. Keeps you engaged throughout. With such a high powered cast, it was unlikely that the movie would fail on any count. I think Dustin Hoffman and Morgan Freeman were absolutely outstanding.
The story is quite believable and raises highly thought provoking issues about the possible consequences of an epidemic. What lifts the movie is the realisation that these type of outbreaks can easily happen and how devastating their fury can be if they are unchecked or undetected even though for a short time period. 9/10
A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
SNL plus more
I enjoyed it quite a bit as I am a great fan of SNL. Having said that, I must confess that even though both lead actors rely considerably on the show to generate the humour, there are quite a few scenes which are fairly original and entertaining. I was also impressed by Dan Hedaya's role as the boys' domineering father. Overall I'd give the movie 7 /10.
