The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019)
Just as expected
This movie was predictable but entertaining. The acting was flat and the characters lacked true depth. A cool story that felt stretched on too long and could've have been cooler short story. Acting was amazing for Maxwell Simba's filmography debut. Overall, it humbles you and was a very inspirational story.
An Unfinished Life (2005)
A classic
Accidents happen everyday. The human bodies leaves scars on the outside but it's the scar inside that deal the most damage. This story shows how much those can tear a person but how there is always a way to forgive and love again. With Einar struggling with recovering from alcoholism and pushing all his loved ones away after his sons death he was in much need of Griffs innocence, but strong personality that reminded him so much of his son. My favorite character by far was Mitch and his quiet wise words and chastisement of Einar. Their relationship was heartfelt and true. (Which reminds me of one of my favorite scenes where Griff assumes they are gay) He was the example to Einar of how to forgive and realize the important things in life after he released the bear. This was a great story of family, hope, and personal growth but it did have its flaws. The relationship of Jean and Sheriff Crane lacked sustenance and was put there to contrast her past love life but it didn't pan out. I could have used more relationship between Griff and Mitch. I thought Gary and Jean could've had more backstory to really explain why Gary would drive all the way to Wyoming to follow her so there was some inference needed. Overall, I loved the symbolism of the bear and how it related to setting free your grudges and letting loved ones go with faith that they will forgive you even past this life. This movie was a gritty upper with a wonderful ranch life bluntness, that I love, and it was very powerful in demonstrating how tough men can love and care for family.
"Mitch: Would you bury me next to Griffin?
Einar: Don't you think you oughtta die first?
Mitch: It's gonna happen, you know.
Einar: Where the hell else do you think I'd bury you? It's where my family lies."
The Circle (2017)
Head scratcher for sure
This movie made me think more than any I've watched in a long time. Not only about it's overall message but about how the director decided to portray this film. He did it in a way I have never seen before. He took a realistic issue of today's technological world, privacy, and advanced his opinion of its importance without explicit proclamation through the characters. He let the premise speak for itself. It was totally unexpected and the I was left on the edge of my seat confused on how the conflict was going to be resolved. But yet, it never did. Well just not in the way I thought. A wonderful element that could have been passed over if not very vigilant was the comments on Mae's transparency stream. That is where both sides of every issue were shown just like the internet does today. This movie did have many drawbacks though. It could have had a better build up and resolution rather than spending so much time building the premise. Mercer's character was flawed and the acting was stressed to fulfill it's purpose. Overall, Emma Watson and Tom Hanks were fabulous as always and the movie achieved exactly what it wanted to. Made me think, but I'm not a huge fan of allegories.
Minority Report (2002)
Too high expectations?
What started out in a very discomforting and strange sci-fi world slowly turned into an interesting plot with a nice twist. Tom Cruise is undoubtably one of the best in the business when it comes to action scenes and intense one liners and this movie allows him to shine in that aspect. With a wonderful beginning idea that could intrigue anyone into watching the film just didn't get executed in the proper way. Many scenes were overly dramatic and honestly just uncomfortable. Along with some fuzzy logistics concerning the precogs and their hive mind/direct future capabilities that just drew my attention away from the story. I would have loved more dive into the ethics of the story's basis and expounding on how the pre-determinism aspect of the precogs was flawed from the beginning. Also an explanation of how the precogs came to be period would help round out my questioning mind. Also, the movie was going for a Hitchcock type of vibe with the music in times where it wasn't necessary and was distracting from letting the actors to do their jobs and pull on the audience. Overall, it's an entertaining movie with a nice ending, but uncomfortable with weird scenes and characters in an undeveloped world.
