Robin Hood (2010)
Not really 'Robin Hood'
This movie, while it has nice visuals and decent action scenes, feels disjointed, slow, and a bit confusing. It also is not like any version of Robin Hood I've ever seen or watched. Basically, the hero is changed from the leader of a band of outlaws, to a soldier leading other soldiers. It's not a 'rob from the rich and give to the poor' movie, rather it's a medieval war movie. Maybe I'd have liked it more if they changed the names of the characters, but it still is a rather boring movie, for all the fighting.
They've changed so many of the characters. The Sheriff of Nottingham is just a minor, rather pathetic character. King John is still kind of a jerk, but he's the one Robin is now fighting for. Marian has been made a much stronger character, which works for me. And the main villain is now a french double agent.
The Grey (2011)
Waste of time
This movie is depressing, unrealistic, and (hard to believe in a movie about killer wolves) boring. I kept thinking that in real life, the survivors would be dead by the end of the first day. Wolves do not act like they do in this movie, no one in this situation would ever act like these guys did (ummm, someone want to sharpen a stick or pick up a club maybe?), and someone like Liam Neeson should be able to hold off the wolves with a knife easy. Oh, and how is he not dead within a few minutes of jumping in the river? And why are the wolves not eating the men they kill? And too many other questions to try and list here. Only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of less is that Neeson is always watchable, even in dreck like this, and the scenery is kinda cool.
Un chien andalou (1929)
One of the worst things I have ever tried to sit through
Stuff like this so called 'film' is what gives foreign cinema a bad name. Just a bunch of ridiculous scenes strung together that make no sense with absolutely no reason for being. Thank goodness it's only 15 minutes long.
Not sure why it has such a high rating, except that I have noticed that if something is boring enough and makes little enough sense, it is judged to have 'artistic' merit or some such. Movies should entertain, and you shouldn't need to check the internet to find out what things mean, a movie should be entirely self-contained. It should make sense using only what is on the screen, and this doesn't.
The Avengers (2012)
Not just a great super-hero movie
I went into this with guarded optimism- let's face it, the movies that led up to it were fun but nothing more. But after seeing this movie, it not only gets my nod for best super-hero movie ever, it's probably going right into my top 10 all-time movies.
Director Whedon has proved that he can take intense action, witty dialogue, and some real emotion and tie them all together into a package that never feels forced. Too often ensemble movies like this try too hard to manufacture tension between members, or artificially manufacture importance for one character at the expense of another, but everything here flows. The Avengers have always involved internal conflict, and the movie portrays it perfectly without going over the top or under-playing it at any point. It's also obvious that there is real love and respect for the characters, as it all feels true to how they were originally written. In all ways, a true winner.
The New Treasure Hunt (1973)
I loved this show
I have some very fond memories of watching this show going up- so rare to see a comedy/game show. I remember Geoff was always trying to get Emil to say something or at least crack a smile, but he never said anything except 'Yes, I did' when asked if he hid the check.
They never had a male contestant, either in this run or the later run in 81/82. The 'official' reason was that it was easier to set up the skit for one specific gender, and since women made more emotional contestants, they chose to go with only women. The real reason was that they were afraid with the elaborate gags leading up to some of the clunks, a man might haul off and hit Geoff. (It's true)
