The Magnetic Monster (1953)
THE 1950'S IS NOT 2019
I too am a "babyboomer" and I very much love the "Sci-Fi" movies of the 1950's!! What I don't do is compare the movies "back then" to the movies of today!! If you are of the mindset that the movies "back then" should compete with the movies of today (although some of those movies "back then" will give the movies of today a run for their money), you are in the wrong theater!!
i discovered this movie when I was labeling some unnamed dvd videos!! If I could collect every movie back then, I would do it in a heartbeat!!
Don't be a dead beat!! Enjoy the movies with the mindset you had back then or don't watch them!!!! Please correct me if I am wrong!!
Forbidden Planet (1956)
A movie for all times.
I viewed this masterpiece, at the "Michigan Theater",in "Ann Arbor" when it was first released in 1956, I was nine years old. That was when parents would allow their kids to go to movies, without parental supervision. My how times have changed for the worse. Anyway!! This is a timeless movie!! 1. The scenery at least from a 9 year old's point of view, was profound! The colors were radiantly subdued, and awe inspiring!!, they stayed with me long years afterward. The color of that sky to this day when I reflect back on the movie, brings back warm memories. The special effects, prior to "Starship Troopers" (1997), was ahead of it's time. For 31 years, I can not think of any movie that was produced, that surpassed the "FP" in special effects, not even the "Superman" movies with "Christopher Reeves" (1978-1983). This movie and its special effects were awesome. I have to say something about the dialog, believe it or not, I was able to follow quite a bit of the dialog, even back then. There are so many things about this movie that has stayed with me over the years, that I can not say it all in under 1000 words, no way!! So I will add to this review, in the future!! This is a movie for the ages, every child should see it.
The Thin Red Line (1964)
A good war flick!!
I disagree with "Witt 7". From beginning to end, this movie portrays, what it must have been like for green troops on the "canal". for example, green troops doing something stupid. The interplay between the various ranks, I thought was well done. The agony of getting a traumatic wound, and suffering through it; brings up movies prior, and after, this one, continue to flash through my mind. The special effects are good and convincing. I also think that the factor of "random chance", as it relates to life and death that "Witt 7" seems to downplay, is very well done. Plus The acting is very good. Bottom line, if you are into war flicks, and you haven't seen this one. I highly recommend this one !!
Men in War (1957)
If you are into "war" flicks, check it out!!
For me this movie goes back a long way!! I saw it when it was first released in 1957, in "Ann Arbor"!! I was 10 years old! "Ann Arbor", at that time showed only "1st" run movies!! Even back then, I felt that something was wrong with, the scene with "James Edwards" I was 10 years old, and I felt that I would have never done, what "Killian"(the part played by "Edwards"), would have done! I also saw this scene in saving "Private Ryan", with "Ken Vesel", remember?? Even in the "tv" series "combat", you see it again!! What it is,is a "reluctance", "inability" or,"outright refusal" to portray "black" soldiers in a positive, competent light!! But then again, "who was writing the scripts"!! If you know what I mean??!! I enjoyed the movie none the less, then and now!! I saw this movie at the "Michigan" theater, when it was first released in "Ann Arbor"!! Just as an aside!!
Beginning of the End (1957)
THIS FILM WAS SHOT IN "the valley", NOT IN ILL.!!
May I proceed!!?? If you review the "image Entertainment"/"Peter Rogers Organization" -"Special Edition, in the "commentary format of the movie; one of the daughters, of "Bert I Gordon", states that the movie was shot in "the valley"!! Do you really care what "Leonard" thinks??? I really enjoyed the movie then, and when I view it, from time to time, I still enjoy it!! "imdb", DO YOU AGREE?? In the commentary format of the movie, i enjoyed the "quirky" sense of humor, of the commentator! In the beginning, I rebelled against "commentaries", I saw them as an "intrusion", to be avoided!! Now my attitude is completely different. I look for them!! This is a damn good!! movie!!
