Grey's Anatomy (2005)
100% pure trash!
This series is trash, of course, what else would you expect of an American medical drama? But let's face it, the Americans do write exceptionally good trash, and this is as good as it gets. With unrealistically beautiful and troubled doctors (of both sexes) and a catchy often, thrilling script, this show never fails to entertain.
The acting is undeniably first rate, and although it might seem a little repetitive, the show has enough flexibility to keep it evolving and exciting.
Sure, it's not everyone's kettle of fish, but i deeply recommend it; it's definitely worth giving a try, for people from all demographics.
Tonari no Totoro (1988)
A nice film for a quiet evening
Firstly i have to say that i enjoyed this film. It was really beautiful to watch, especially with the rolling Japanese countryside, (as with all Miyakazi films) and was suitably short. Many of the scenes were innovative and i particularly enjoyed the cat bus scenes. However, as much as i liked the film, there were some major flaws, the main reason i only gave this film 7 out of 10. The first Miyakazi film i watched was Howl's Moving Castle, an epic film which i thoroughly enjoyed and watched multiple times. Howls Castle had a good script and good English voice-overs, but most importantly it had a credible plot and at the end of the film, i was left feeling i had achieved something by watching it. Unfortunately, this film didn't really go anywhere, and despite the fact i enjoyed it, i wasn't very pleased with it. The characters began to grate, especially the little child (Mia?), and the script was very weak. It may be that the English translation was very poor, and in that case, it was acceptable, but i was unimpressed with it at the end of the day. On the other hand, the shortness of the film saved it, and i would definitely recommend this as a good children's film, though I'm not sure it would appeal to a lot of adults, (i am typing here aware that a good deal of adults have commented and really enjoyed this film, but this is purely my humble opinion). I think 7 is a perfectly decent score for a perfectly decent film, but i think it is somewhat lacking in some departments, and that is a little bit disappointing.
Eragon (2006)
A terrible shame!
Unfortunately, having enjoyed reading the book, i was disappointed in the movie. Even from the very start of the film the quality of the script was shown up,. A particularly feeble performance from Ed Speelers, who looked nothing like a farmer boy, but did act like one, didn't help, but mainly the script was what let the film down. The stereotypical bad guys, who despite being surrounded by so much 'scary' fire all the time, looked almost comical, and had lines to match.
The CGI was fine, but nothing special, and not much care had been taken with the costumes and the soundtrack. That was disappointing. So was the battle scene, which was farcical, and again, they tried to cram too much battle into too short a scene, despite the fact that they managed to give Eragon plenty of time to have philosophical conversations with his dragon, played excellently by Rachel Weisz.
The only thing i can say in defence of the movie was that there is so much material in the book, and so much is needed to improve and expand on the characters in the book, that the directors had to cut a lot. However the job they did was feeble and so was the film.
But the real question is; can they correct the mess they've made with a good sequel? I hope so, although maybe they won't even get around to making a sequel.
Loose Change: Second Edition (2005)
A disturbing idea
This film has provoked such discussion amongst all of you, just read the comments, that i'm quite impressed. Those of you who blame it on conspiracy theory, are being single minded. I do not believe that the film is totally correct; actually, a lot of it is probably wrong. But only a small bit of correct evidence is not good enough. They have no conclusive evidence, but this helps their case to some extent. If the video tapes from the nearby buildings were just released straight away, then there would be no controversy, as they could have blown the Pentagon attack as a missile out of the water. But it wasn't. Isn't that just slightly strange? If the FDR was uncovered and released to the press, then it would blow their theory out of the water. But it wasn't found. How does a building, which nowadays are constructed so very carefully, free fall due to a fire in the upper segments. I'm not a great physicist, but there's something wrong here. Buildings just don't free fall, seriously. These are some of the more interesting discussion points, and i feel that they really ought to be discussed. One final fact that they have right, is that the Bush government did benefit from the attack. In favour of the sceptics, bombs could have been planted by terrorists, (I do think bombs were planted and went off, buildings don't free fall) and we all know at the moment that a bomb is one of the terrorists greatest weapons.
I was disappointed that they took an opinion at the end, as one of the pros of the film was that it just gave evidence, perhaps slightly biased, and no accusations. I liked the film, because it obviously took a long time to put together, and there is an element of mystery. Except the soundtrack, which was corny and unnecessary.
Prometheus (1998)
A Lesson in Tedium
Perhaps this is the truest form of Marmite in film has yet offered humanity. It seems to have been well reviewed by some sources and I cannot argue with their conclusions. Yet for me, these seem entirely erroneous.
The film, in my opinion, was too long, too contrived, too repetitive, too tedious, poorly directed and most of all I just found it sadly enormously dull. I could rant for some time, but I feel the best direction I can give to those who are reading this review is to tell of the reaction of my family and two friends (ages ranging from 16-59 years old) who one summer's evening drove out to an outdoor viewing of this film at which Tony Harrison was himself present.
We look back on it now with some hilarity, but of those 7 viewers (myself included) I can personally guarantee readers that this film could not possibly have attained more than 20 stars (less than 3 on average per person). It was, for us, a horrible evening of subjection to the worst form of artistic expression. I would urge readers to stay away from this film, but they say seeing is believing, so go find out for yourself. In my case, I truly believe this ranks amongst the worst "films" I have ever seen.
