Restos do Vento (2022)
I had high hopes for this, but meh.
When this film came out back in 22 I was really eager to see it, since it dwelled in the portuguese pagan traditions of the caretos, a subject seldomly approched in portuguese cinema, and which greatly interests me. But alas, it's only used for one of two plot points, and doesn't hold much interest in the film. Coud have still been a great film nevertheless, but falls short. I´ll start by comending the photogtaphy and cinematograhy, beautiful shots, plans and scenery, which for me are the best thing about this film. The actors are ok, lacking in some regards, but passable. The worst part is the plot, dull, predictable, it fails to interest and engage. It had potential, but it did not came into fruition. How this came to be a part of Cannes official selection, i´ll never know.
The Little Mermaid (2018)
Wholeheartdly family fun with a touch of magic
I saw the trailer for this film in the cinema, and thought they were remaking the little mermaid. The choice of the title was quite poorly made, I think the producers thought they would attract all the disney lovers with it, which they did, only to disappoint them. This film is a different turn on the story, and bares little resemblance with the original. It does have its fair share of magic, some of the actors are quite good and some are fairly bad (the magician... yikes!), I think most of the children interested in fantasy will enjoy the film, as will some adults. The story is interesting and the plot develops well, but bare in mind at all times, it is a children's film.
Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)
Good family fun
I went to see this on imax on the pre-premiere today, and it was a pleasant surprise. I don't really recall many details about the first one, the only thing I know is that I went in with huge expectations and came out disappointed. This time, I went with no expectations. The film didn't seem that good judging by the trailer, so I just went with an open mind, and this time, came out pleased. I can't say it is an awesome film that will stay engraved in my mind forever, but it is good fun. The film is entertaining enough, although it lacks pace at some moments around the middle of the story, and can be a bit boring. Whenever I notice myself wondering for how much time I've been in the theater, I know that the film isn't doing its job properly. That being said, the visuals are quite stunning and they really make you dive into wonderland. I found the acting to be lukewarm, with some exceptions (Johnny deep did do a wonderful mad hatter this time, as well as Helena Bonham Carter, who never fails to perform). I left the theater feeling not amazed, but pleased with the film. It was a fun experience, not out of this world but still fun, and I would recommend it.
Capitães da Areia (2011)
It's an effort, but it lacks magic.
I'm not going to say it's an awful terrible film, because it isn't. It lacks the magic of the book, the spirit, the joy and innocence of what being a child is, the beautifully sad way in which the children of the book lived, that Amado described so very skilfully. The film is terribly fragmented, doesn't show us the soul of most characters, their backgrounds, their stories. It doesn't convey the feeling that the capitães de areia are a very tight family. It decides to focus on some parts of the book, and leave others aside completely, and in my opinion, some of the choices are trivial at best. The actors are amateurish, and the dialogue is always done in a very theatrical fake way. Some of the shots, plans and camera tricks are unnecessary and don't add anything to the film. It gives too much importance to Brazilian folklore (candomblé, capoeira and such) while it should focus on much more important aspects. I understand it is hard to convey the power and feeling of such an intense book, but i believe it is possible. That being said, I did enjoy the photography, the beautiful shots of the scenery, and the way that some scenes were explored. It was an effort, but it falls much much much short of the book.
Um Amor de Perdição (2008)
Nice, but too much.
If there's a word to describe this film, that word is too much. It's a nice film, with beautiful moments (particulary concerning photography), but it lacks a storyline and it has too much drama. Where's the justification behind the deep love that unites Simão and Teresa? Their story doesn't make much sense, at least not in the modern era. Furthermore, Simon is just your typical rich rebellious guy, too pretentious and wanna be bad, thus becoming annoying at times. Mariana should be a stronger character, her role in the film, doesn't amount to much in the end. I liked Rita's character (the way she talks is a bit artificial at times, but that's acceptable, concerning her age), and Zé Xavier plays a good character as well. I expected more from this film, but still, it was entertaining enough.
Backlight (2010)
Not good, not too bad... Eatable.
I was really excited to go and see this movie in the theater. It seemed interesting enough, conveying some kind of powerful message, and i usually like these kinds of movies. But halfway through the film i was already feeling really disappointed. The story is pretty predictable (i kinda guessed the end halfway through the movie), basic and a bit blah. You keep expecting it too pick up but it never does. It's entertaining enough (it didn't bore me to death), but it lacks something. The relationship between the mother and the daughter is completely unrealistic, and so are the links that join all the characters together in the end. It's okay if you want to rent it from your local DVD rent store, but don't waste your money on a theater ticket.
