A strong cast with good direction and photography. You will develop a sense of the real life in a modern Russian village by being exposed to the diverse characters that dwell there. A bit quirky at times, I was reminded of the American TV series "Northern Exposure", in many ways. The title refers to a police district, which Russia is completely divided into. The main character is the district "cop on the beat" and the plot revolves around the interactions of the diverse cast. Many excellent and convincing performances. You will leave with a real feeling for Rodina, Mother Russia as it exists away from the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, filled with complex and compelling people, places, and events.

Shtrafbat (2004)
10/10
Challenging story with excellent acting, direction, and production.

Many experienced and excellent actors mixed together in an ongoing plot of an untold part of world war II on the eastern front. Characters well portrayed and unforgettable. One episode leaves you wishing for the next. Pay attention to the closing credits were the thousands of Shtrafbat battalions are listed. An untold story involving hundreds of thousands of individuals. Sometimes brutal, sometimes romantic, always filled with real people and dialog. Produced with excellent sets and camera work. Heroes and villains, criminals and priests, patriots and traitors. Portrait of people struggling to survive and overcome a most terrible time. I wish to buy a copy for my own collection so to be able to enjoy the series repeatedly.
