Dealin' with Idiots (2013)
Enjoyable!!
Not the most perfect movie and doesn't aspire to be. However it is unique in the sense that the comedy doesn't come from situations but from the interactions between the characters. The movie is about a comedy writer interviewing little league suburbanite parents who each seem to be suffering from a distinct and hilarious personality disorder. Each of the suburbanites are played by top notch comedian whom I've seen in other roles and have enjoyed. Ironically Garlin plays the straight man to the wacky cast of characters he's forced to deal with.
If I had one criticism, it would be that the film had a lack of an ending. However, despite that fact, it didn't take away from the ride, and during that ride you knew you were experiencing something unique anyway. Uniqueness is what I feel like is missing from most movies and in that, this film delivers. A hidden gem and worth a watch, I look forward to more from Jeff Garlin.
The Box (2009)
This movie wanted you to think but all I thought was how bad it was
The Box is set in the 1976 and from the beginning I wondered why, and at the end I still don't understand why, but it was. I tried to analyze the reasoning behind this but found no solid justification for it. From there it was one confusing dragged out pointless scene after another.
Im writing a spoiler free review so I wont get into specifics, but lets just say that if your going to see the movie because the trailer looked good or the premise seemed interesting, you will probably be disappointed. Many questions are set forth and no answers are given. I waited the entire movie for a payoff that never came. Its a shame because the movie had such potential for being a satisfying movie with a message but it went off in so many different directions that it just seemed to try to show me how much smarter this movie was than me.
The movie dropped hints throughout as to what was going on, but none of them solid or satisfying. Maybe you have to watch the movie several times to understand what was going on, but I cant see myself ever sitting through that mess ever again.
Hit and Run (2009)
Shatters the horror fomula in a good way
I wouldn't consider this really a horror film, it's more of a thriller in the sense that typical horror films stick to a strict formula. Killer preys on victims then victim eventually wins. This movie throws that all out the window. I wanted to make this a spoiler free review so without going into specifics, you have a difficult time trying to decide who the victim actually is. How do you define victim? Usually in horror films it's clear, here, its not because the victim and the killer behave in ways you don't expect in a typical horror fashion.
The story structure is a journey of what to do next and then it turns that formula completely upside down when the main character who is in the driver seat becomes the passenger along for the ride. The character in the "killer" role takes you to unexpected places with satisfying results.
You never know what will come happen next with this movie, and that's the fun of it. I recommend it for those looking for something different.
