Sarpatta Parambarai (2021)
3 hours of awesomeness!!
Okay I had huge expectations for this film before watching and I'm afraid this film won't satisfy your expectations. Like it will be even more impressive than you thought this would be.
Haven't seen any other sports film in India that's so much raw, detailed, well edited like Sarpatta parambarai. This is like an FPS game where yours is a POV of Chennai in the 1970s.
Just to give you how much engaging this film is, the opening scene in this film is 22 minutes. Like just one scene and it's bloody 22 minutes but it was also bloody engrossing. The film runs for 173 minutes and not once do you feel bored.
I have to say this but Sarpatta has to be easily the best Indian sports film ever produced just cause this is the actual representation on how life and sports works in India! No hiding from the truth. Not even shying away from political interests among the sportsmen when the 1970s emergency happened. This is way too realistic that sensitive people can easily get offended. Almost gives the same experience Scorsese gave you in Raging bull!
The performances gives you a standard to measure someone's performamce next time you watch a good film. Arya is just outstanding! So are Pasupathy,John Vijay, Kalaiyarasan and the ensemble cast out of whom, everyone performed excellently!
Pa Ranjith has given a masterpiece to not miss in your life. Go watch Sarpatta Parambarai on Amazon prime NOW!
Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989)
Brilliant, excellent, what else?
If you take a rant of the best actors in Indian cinema( all time ) Kamal haasan would be atleast in the top 5! I don't think I'll finish describing about the God-level of acting( Please watch a few scenes from the film to understand what I'm talking about), beautifully coherent screenplay, witty dialogues (I love the wordplay in movies which has crazy mohan as the writer), heart throbbing music by Ilayaraja and to sum it all, Singeetham srinivas rao's direction! I would describe bout these for years on end. But you ain't got time. So go and watch the film please!
Anjali (1990)
Makes even the strongest cry
I'm not a person who cries during films. The only films which made me cry is moondram pirai(Tamil,1983) and Coco(English,2017). Now I can add Anjali on to the list. Its soft and strong at the same time. I don't know how maniratnam handled all the kids(and also made them act so naturally) in the films. You could watch it on a happy day and neutralize your day to that of a man having balanced moods and still have a good takeaway!
Hey Ram (2000)
Bang on!
Kamal haasan is and will be in the top 5 most influential people of Indian cinema, PERIOD!
I mean I don't have words to describe this movie literally. Just go and watch it please!
Uttama Villain (2015)
Art all the way!
I got my longing desire of watching a modern day film with a K.Vishwanath-esque flavour. The best part is he also acted in this film. Uttama villain is a beautiful and emotional piece of art which shows the irony of a dying actor wanting to portray an immortal man in his last film. K.B sir got his fitting tribute! But why did this film fail at the box office? That's a question to be answered if only a major set of the audience appreciated art rather than kissing the butt of commercial films!
Chhapaak (2020)
Why Deepika?
*Chhappak is an intentionally good film* which would've impressed the producer during the narration process but I highly doubt that this would be the game changer! *If you want to do justice to acid attack victims, make it as a documentary that's 30 mins long!* but we're stuck with a jarringly long film which has no value to be gained from whatsover.
Asuran (2019)
The Vada-payaasam of Indian cinema
(Read the last line if you're in a hurry)
You know you have a good movie when there's Vetrimaran involved in it. Let alone it having Dhanush collabing in it. Asuran is a better film than a good film!
The duo's previous ventures like polladhavan, aadukalam and vadachennai proved colossal and even earned them national acclaim. What does asuran has to please the audience?
First, the writing:
Any Vetrimaran film grants the characters of the film an inamiable right to have a character arc. A character arc is just a timeline where the character has a beginning, a conflict or association(a vital one) with the plot and an ending. This just ensures that any major character has a purpose in the plot. You could've seen this in vadachennai, even though there were countless major characters in the film, every one of them proved pivotal in the moving of the story.
Asuran has relatively less characters but still no one is an unwanted 'aani' (nail) and shape the story of asuran. The screenplay though is less appealing as compared to vetrimaaran's previous films. The interval block planned at a Baasha type of range promises it impact but fails due to a hurried narration
And the second half carries the flashback of the protagonist. Even though it contributes to the tone of the film, the character arc of the protagonist, removing it from the film won't damage the central conflict of the film.
Second, the acting:
When there's Dhanush on screen, you can't flaw his acting especially when there is scope for him to act. Manju Warrier impresses me with her acting and most importantly her tamizh pronounciation with the nellai touch to it was so accurate which guarentees her a spot in the best debut accolades. Teejay Arunachalam in the role of an angry young lad is promising and Ken karunas too emotes in his subtle role well as there are his good portions in the first half and the climax. Pasupathy is one underrated actor in Tamil cinema which is a point to note. Aadukalam Naren,Pawan,Ammu abhirami and all other supporting cast too get their lines good and score in the run.
Third, the crew:
Asuran is half baked without the amazing crew of velraj,gv Prakash..etc. Velraj gives us vadachennai vibes from his shady visuals mostly due to the film's events happening majorly in the darkness. I so badly want GV Prakash to get back to making music again because this a V.V.Good album in terms of score and songs. The asuran theme is one of the best theme songs I've heard in this year. It literally makes my hair stand when it plays in the climax premises.
One line review:
You know Vadachennai is a world class film. So, Vadachennai > Asuran > A good film !
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019)
Else than Chiranjeevi
Chiranjeevi's eyes are enough to prove the mammoth of mass and class. Flawless, energetic even at 60 you name it!After Rajinikanth and kamal hassan, he's among the aging yet ageless actors of South. Being grand in the budget, sye raa lacks the consistency in writing. Except Chiranjeevi, all other characters were thin and almost forgettable!
The writing of the screenplay and shaping of the characters was so bad that when there is a threat to the protagonist and his allies, there is no sense of fear in the audience's mind because Narasimha Reddy is granted a Demi-god status so audience are just made to believe that he'll snap out of any threat even when the threat is colossal!
But still for the gigantic production value, beautiful visuals, background score and of course for the megastar himself, the film is watchable even more than once despite the flaws in the writing!
