La dernière vie de Simon (2019)
Powerful and heartbreaking
First of all, I d like to say that i am French and we dont see many French movies like this. Our producers are afraid to greenlight genre movies as they think us French are not into it. They are so wrong!
Here Leo Karmann makes a Steven Spielberg's style movies French. He doesnt hide his love for E. T. as well as many Spielberg movies and many scenes are clearly an hommage. The lighting, the lenses used, the children's height point of view serve a very beautiful story.
We meet Simon when he s eight. He's a very lonely orphan who has a shape shifting gift, but only with people he had physically touched. When he finally meets a family who loves him and has a special bonds with the two kids, things turn out in a way that will change the life of everyone.
I will not say more so that you ll discover this beautiful story.
I must say that the cast is awesome but kuddos to the kiddos and teens who are particularly well chosen.
Finally, I liked that the script was not forgetting any details, made all this believable and coherent.
Fantastic movie. You may want to keep a box of tissues near by.
Vesper (2022)
Gloomy and poetic
I went to watch that movie because i had a free ticket. I did not know much about it except that it was post apocalyptic.
It was a very good susprise then as i loved it. The world depicted is a mix of technology and raw material, mud and modified nature, poetry and despair. Guillermo del toro on the creepy dark side meets David Cronenberg as for "squish squish"organs material.(some scenes may disturb you if you are not doing great with intestines, brains and all)
I liked the fact that we dive in this muddy destroyed world right away, following a struggling teen and her sick dad.
The script is not that original with the usual barrier between riches and poors but it s well written and the characters are very interesting. Good casting too.
I must add that the soundtrack is well balanced and beautiful.
I hope there will be a sequel.
Layer Cake (2004)
Not bad but awful on the women side
On the whole, this is a pretty good British gangster movie. The script, though not very surprising is well written and there are a lot of good actors in it. The action is good too. BUT on the Beshdel scale (feminist point of view) this movie is really bad. Why on earth did they write the name of Sienna Miller on the poster, while she's only there to shake her booty and put on suspenders? The other woman part is dumb and hysterical too. Plus, there is a completely useless sexe scene (women boobies and fanny, yeahhh!).
It's a pity to under employ actresses this way. The women roles could have been fun or perky.
