Europa Report (2013)
Decent story let down by mediocre ending, A review by a Space Enthusiast
I am one of those you can call a "space buff". I read lots of astronomy books/blogs as it fascinates me and indulges my curiosity for ultimate answers such as "Is there life in the universe".
The Europa mission shown in this movie is trying to ask the same question. Six astronauts from different backgrounds join the expedition for searching for life on Europa by drilling into the subsurface water. The plot is built up in a very nice manner by showing the launching and the director making statements such as "This is the farthest that any man has ever gone".
I was not expecting the visuals to be spectacular. Yet, i enjoyed the scenes as they were far from "crap". Especially the scene where they are preparing for descent to Europa, the surface looked gorgeous. Also, the visuals after once they landed was awe inspiring as well. Also, the camaraderie of the teammates was a plus point. Another very good point about this movie was , the movie is well researched from a scientific point of view and it was cool to watch the crew using scientific terms to describe the state of the ship/environmental conditions.
A major theme of this movie was - Putting your team first. We see a sacrifice by one of the crew members in order to keep others safe. It was a poignant moment to be honest where he questions whether this was "worth it" after having convinced itself that it was. Also, the crew was filled with this passion for the unknown which enabled them to undertake this great journey and ultimately gets one of the overenthusiastic crew member killed.
My biggest gripe with this movie is that the ending was clichéd. They could have come up with something original, something mysterious, but instead chose the safe way of showing what was to be expected. It was the same disappointment i had with Prometheus, which had a worse story than this movie. And why o why, the alien creature has to be always hostile and is bent on killing everyone that landed from a foreign land.
They could have come up with an imaginative/intellectually stimulating ending but they took the safe route with something that most of the audience will lap up as the "moment of the movie". Not good enough. I hope Interstellar will be the movie that i have been waiting for.
Agneepath (2012)
Absolute fantastic piece of art
The best thing about the movie was it was on a constant roll, never trying to fill in stuff. From the moment we witnessed the small Birju with all his intensity and the menacing Kancha, we knew something special was in store. This is the first time i have found Sanjay dutt this scary ,even more threatening that his Khalnayak Role. Rishi kapoor proves once again why is the versatile hero of bollywood. Nobody could have done that rauf lala role better.
But the person who has lent his heart and soul into the film is hrithik. He has expressed so many moods and emotions in one movie, this may be his best role till date. There are so many subtle tender moments in the movie with Hrithik alternating between vengeance(Kancha), comradeship(Gaitaonde)and Joy ( seeing his sister). However at times i felt certain scenes were overdone to intentionally create a dramatic effect. Ah but thats bollywood.
Yet another winner this movie. Go see enjoy :)
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008)
A bastion of perplexity and boredom
First the good news- It is better than om shanti om
Bad news- It is nowhere near DDLJ
The groundwork of the story is very interesting leading to some very interesting possibilities of some unconventional character development and engaging storyline. But along with another flattering to deceive intro, the plot becomes severely flawed with unrealistic behaviour of a married woman, sudden transmutation of a nerd to a dude and utter lack of interesting characters to fill in this otherwise stale plot.
The nerdy character of Shahrukh khan, Mr Surender Sahni is an affable persona at first impression. No doubt the cinema goer will fall in love with the utterly ingenuous, totally spontaneous and unmasked behaviour of Srk.However the character of Raj seems too far-fetched and overacted. As for Anoushka, she is a splendid ,fresh treat to the eyes and also Adi seems to have extracted the best of her potential as she impresses considerably to be tagged the " next big thing".Shahrukh has a broader range of emotions to work with here that infuses fresh blood to his acting as compared to previous films like Om shanti Om and Anosuhka is eye candy and spellbinding at the same time.
The movie has its dose of slapstick humour and poignant drama. For those steadfast devotees of Srk's mannerisms this movie is a sheer delight. The songs complement the situations with Haule Haule and Dance pe chance being the most memorable ones.No doubt, this is going to be a superhit as did OSO but it is hard to believe a director who made the perfect romantic movie a decade back, is falling short of some novel, ingenious ideas on a great script. However, this is the perfect launchpad for the cute dimpled Anoushka and she has definitely gone on to the big league.RNBDJ doesn't impress.Let's wait for Ghajini.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
As perfect a story as has ever been written
OK let me start with your most beloved TV shows.Like for example, mine is friends. The last episode, the last season is always a heartbreaker,a tearjerker where you look back upon all the wonderful times and cry your heart out that it will never come back again. The shawshank redemption does just that and believe me within a span of two hours.
Man wherever he is,he is in heaven. He just realizes it after the time has passed. You can kill man's body, you can kill's man mind, but how can you kill hope.Man possesses a divine hope of spreading its wings into the sky even in the darkest of clouds.Imprisonment of the senses is possible, but how will you check the flow of love,it will flow till man is alive. We wish for a better future, but we already know that we cannot bid goodbye to our present, however wretched it is because we still have something to live for to hope for each day.Wherever man goes,if he has love in his heart,he finds love in others.
Morgan freeman is as natural an actor as there has ever been one.The sentiment of Stephen king has been instinctively been understood by frank Darabont and the final product is a lifetime of emotional journey through the eyes of a hopeful, Christ believing good man.
Friends (1994)
I still can't believe it's over
Granted its over and many have forgotten but in the hearts of millions of fans the show still lives on.I can't believe when i am feeling down if i remember any event of friends,it cracks me up.As entertaining as it was, furthermore it has left a deep psychological effect on me.I still sometimes wonder what would have happened had the show went on.The pairing of the six people was beautiful and in due course they really became best friends. The parting was just too painful and we all wished that the show never ended It instilled in everyone of us a desire to be friends like them.It was not just about the comedy it was also about the emotional bonding. It was a beautiful mix of eccentric characters who passed their lives leaning on the trusty shoulders of their friends
Jumper (2008)
Uhm not Impressive!
This is again one of those movies where i think a little tweaking of the plot,a little more thought put into character development,a little more responsive acting by the actors could have made this movie better. My imagination went wild hearing the concept of the story.I began to fantasize a lonely hero with the ability to transport himself anywhere puts to use his gift to rescue the world.I know it sounds cliché but when you throw in the fact that the guy could "jump anywhere" opens a Pandora's box of exciting possibilities Sadly the writers couldn't do much justice to a potential story.I didn't understand whether the film tried too hard or was a half hearted effort. The most obvious flaw was the mediocre acting.( There's laughing in my head). It made Hayden look like a complete confused fool.Poor Millie had nothing else to do but being pushed around by revengeful Palladins and love hungry jumpers. Also the storyline seemed like being taken out from a daytime action from cartoon network. No character development,no stress on the story and the concept, and no concern whatsoever of audience's expectations makes this one a mediocre movie. It could have been but was simply not impressive
The Water Horse (2007)
Man, i relived my childhood!!!
These movies are meant for children no doubt giving headway to their free flowing imagination but it is also for adults to relive the unfulfilled fantasies of their childhoods.Set in the scenic hills and lakes of lochness, the story tells the tale of a little boy stumbling upon the egg of a sea horse out of which is born a precious animal whom angus loves dearly.
The background score, the haunting picturesque scenes of the countryside, the impressive cgi of the water horse and most importantly weaving all of these into a lovely poignant tale of the love between a boy and his new best friend,a love which spanned his entire lifetime.Kudos to the story, kudos to Scotland and kudos to the legend of the deep,we hope someday we get to be your best friend
Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
Good,definitely good
Jodhaa Akbar is a masterpiece of cinema making.Every movie that Ashutosh Gowariker makes is larger than life.To see a 3 and a half hour long, the director has to put at least 3 years of effort.Entering first twenty minutes into the movie,i was blow away. The larger than life magnificence of the situation ,the persona of the characters got to me.The beginning is greatly crafted with the mighty war sequence which to me was the best fight sequence in the movie. We are introduced to a sensitive kid, Jalal ID din Mohammad Akbar who does not wishes to behead the defeated opponent. This is the first glimpse to the wonderful character of Akbar as portrayed in the movie- fearless, committed to justice, honesty and integrity.
From there onwards Hrithik takes over the role flawlessly. His aggression, his dominant stature will scare the wits out of you. What an actor.Carries every role with such grace and commitment. Here we get to his totally new belligerent attitude. The will to win,the integrated mind and soul, the fiery stature and the grand air around him makes Hrithik the quintessential element to watch out.
Aishwarya Rai is good, not great. Her character was very sweet but not much of a influential role.We see a bit of her charisma in the ways she dresses up,the smile that she gives, the way she challenges Akbar to a duel. However we can excuse her for when you see the film you cannot think of anyone else for the role of Jodhabai.
The chemistry between Hrithik and Aishwarya is heart warming reminding everyone who has had an arranged marriage the initial shyness, the willingness to approach the other, the overwhelming passion to confess one's love. The best part is the background score of "Jashne Bahara" which fits with the charisma of Aishwarya and the grace of Hrithik.
Praising all that, now i come to the somewhat less interesting and unneeded parts of the film. There is too much Hindu Muslim unity sentiment prevalent in the film. When you watch, you can literally filter through the film, the mind goes like "Come on fast forward man".Also if you compare with Lagaan the ending wasn't too grand. And there were some characters i could not relate to like Sonu Sood who plays Aishwarya's brother.I did not feel sad when he was killed.Parts such as these to me were not needed and something else could have been thought about. And finally at the end of the movie Amitabh Bachhan declares "despite such a love story their love was forgotten".Exactly the same thing he says after the ending of Lagaan.
All in all,a good movie.A treat for the eyes and the ears and definitely a treat for the sensitive hearts who feel the pangs of love.I thought it would be better but i still give it 8/10.Bravo Ashutosh you are one of the greatest directors ever.
Titanic (1997)
Never seen anything better
It really physically hurts me when i don't see it in top 250 in IMDb's list.I am from India where the general perception of Hollywood movies are that they are more action oriented big budget entertaining films. We consider our films to be more emotional and poignant.
However this movie is the most heart touching story i have ever seen on screen.I could see people's faces with tears rolling down after departing from the cinema hall.I could hear my father saying " Never knew that these people could make such heart warming movies".Maybe i am going a bit too far.But this is my way of paying tribute to the greatest movie ever made.
